Rock hard! 'Unusually large' penis carving is uncovered by archaeologists on the cornerstone of a Roman tower during excavations in southern Spain

A crude drawing spray-painted onto a lamppost or scribbled inside a school textbook may cause an eye roll, but wouldn't be too surprising.

However archaeologists were taken aback when they discovered an 18-inch (half-metre) phallic carving in an ancient Roman settlement known as El Higuerón.

Excavations by the Museo Histórico Local de Nueva Carteya uncovered the bas-relief penis, which was unveiled on the museum's social media channels last Friday.

El Higuerón, a municipality of Nueva Carteya in Spain, was occupied by Iberians in the 4th century BC until the Roman conquest of the region around 206 BC.

They erected a tower-shaped building on its ruins which is currently being uncovered, and carved the phallus on one of its cornerstones.

Romans believed the symbol was the embodiment of masculine power and brought about protection and good fortune, so depictions have been found throughout Roman culture.

Andrés Roldán, a researcher at the University of Extremadura and director of the museum, described it as 'unusually large'.

He told El País: 'It was common to put them on the facades of houses, and soldiers carried small phallic amulets as symbols of virility.

'We are currently researching whether one of similar dimensions has been previously found.'

There once was a man from Glengozzle
Who discovered a remarkable fossil
He knew by the bend
And the wart at one end
‘Twas the peter of St. Paul the Apostle

Watched the whole movie in Germany with my fiance and parents back in the early 70s. They LOVED it. All German when the words were spoken but songs were in English.....

I still remember every bit of it. Wifey does, too...

I also had to watch the movie, “The Sting” completely in German.... they called it “Der Clou.”

To this day I still don’t know much about what that movie was about. :0)

The most famous of Roman penii statues were found on roadsides throughout the empire as something like guideposts, called a Herm or Hermae (pl.). Often just a square column, with a man’s head and genitalia on it, they were ubiquitous.

And at some later date, someone else took a dislike to all those penii, and systematically smashed them on Hermae throughout the empire.

The ancient Greeks had the herms. In 415 B.C., just before the Athenian expedition to Sicily was set to sail, all the herms in Athens had their phalli broken off. That created a panic—people thought it was part of a plot to overthrow the government. After an investigation they thought they figured out who the guilty men were but scholars still debate what the true story was.

They were also designed to draw the eye so anyone with an “Evil Eye” would spot the carving first and use up most of their “blast” on the carvings. the first “blast” of the Evil Eye were believed to be the strongest.

There is some interesting grafitti scratched on the wall in Pompeii near a rich man’s house.
“HOC EGO CACAVI.” Even the common people seemed to be educated in ancient Rome.

In Roman culture, a penis on a building or wall was considered a symbol of good luck...similar to a horseshoe. Saw an article about one found carved in a stone at Hadrians Wall.

I should mention that I have a book of the art from the “forbidden rooms” of Pompeii. EROS IN POMPEII. I only bought the book because it had Pliny’s description of the volcano erupting and destroying the city. Honest!

So you’re saying that if we want to clean up the beltway we have to start by breaking dicks? Works for me. Do I have to take a number or will a dick be assigned to me?
