Fifth-generation cattle rancher aims to build biggest U.S. beef plant

CHICAGO, June 6 (Reuters) - A fifth-generation cattle rancher and consultant plans to build the country's largest beef plant in South Dakota with capacity to slaughter 8,000 head of cattle a day.

The $1.1 billion project could help address the Biden administration's concerns about rising food prices and a lack of competition in the meat sector, though it would not be up and running until at least 2026. read more

The project is spearheaded by Kingsbury and Associates and Sirius Realty, both run by Megan Kingsbury of a South Dakota ranching family. She told Reuters she expects construction on the plant to begin in 2023 and take three years.

The Biden administration and Congress scrutinized the beef industry after COVID-19 outbreaks temporarily shut slaughterhouses in early 2020, leaving ranchers with nowhere to deliver cattle and consumers facing meat shortages.

Four big companies - Cargill (CARG.UL), Tyson Foods Inc (TSN.N), JBS SA (JBSS3.SA), and National Beef Packing Co (MRFG3.SA) - slaughter about 85% of all U.S. fed cattle, according to industry data. The administration has blamed a lack of competition in the sector for rising food prices. Meat companies deny the accusation.

Feds will delay permits; wackos will take them to court; it will be 2050, if then, before a spade of dirt is moved.

And local. I was just talking with a local friend yesterday. She was telling me with great pride about her 5-year old daughter's involvement in slaughtering and butchering a steer on their small farm. I asked her how many steers they slaughter each year and if they could raise more if they wanted given the price of beef skyrocketing. They could do more, but all of the government regulations stand in the way of making it worth the effort.

This is just another example of government getting in the way of individuals and picking winners and losers. There is a reason that there are only 4 major meat processors in America, and you only have to look at the money they spend on lobbying politicians to understand how they got where they are today.

The $1.1 billion project could help address the Biden administration's concerns about rising food prices and a lack of competition in the meat sector...That is nauseating. It sounds like they are going to make this big investment to make Brandon happy. Is there a more important goal in American life than making Brandon happy?

Of course, Brandon will probably be very unhappy because we are all supposed to be eating insect protein by 2026 and not consume methane belching and methane farting cows. Brandon won't be able to catch is Great White Whale of destroying America if a new meat plant is built.

You can’t sell ranch beef without the USDA stamp of approval and the cost of a meat inspector in house that you pay for.

The alternative is to sell the cow, let the rancher take it to the community abattoir and you buy finished beef paying for the cow, the butchering and packaging and pick up your approximately 41% of the on the hoof weight to put in the freezer. If I don’t go to the sale and get a calf to fatten, this is what I do. It works out to about $5 a lb for finished beef at current prices of about $1.35 on the hoof.

A lot of people are not able or resistant to this process.

We have a new tribal abattoir. I’ll be interested to see how that works out and how heavy the thumbs on the scales are.

Butchering beef it a messy business by the way. Only 41% to 44% goes in the package. The rest, well, you gotta do something with it all.

The FDA, DOL, and USDA seem to conspire against anyone trying to compete in this market.

Exactly. Plus, that lazy ass government meat inspector does very little to insure the quality and safety of meat. The private sector can handle this on their own a whole lot better and a whole lot cheaper.

Personally, I have no fears in buying eggs, raw milk, poultry, pork and beef from family and friends that are farmers. I trust all of them more than I will ever trust government. Additionally, I have no problems helping or doing the butchering. I can't do a steer by myself because I don't have a front loader, but everything else I can do on my own without an USDA inspector looking over my shoulder. I've done it for years for big and small game, and recently with pork and poultry.

Ha ha ha. They think Joe wants people to eat? The Biden administration will do its level best not to let that plant be built forget about ever opening.

Unless he has developed a way for industrial robots to do the work, his biggest hurdle will be finding enough workers to butcher 8,000 head of cattle per day without resorting to hiring illegals.

This is South Dakota. Gov Kristi is a certified cowgirl. My money will be on minimal road blocks. It will be entertaining to see who Bidum might use to slow it down. But this is the country of Crazyhorse. Federal dumbasses step up at their peril.

Exactly.

I have a lot of chicken processing plants near me, they're almost exclusively staffed with illegals and the government won't do a thing about it. They came in the mid 90's and almost overnight the plants fired all the locals (who then went on welfare) and hired illegals.

Slaughtering 8000 head a day with a workforce sourced locally in South Dakota is going to be a chore.
