The Texas shooting shows the futility of arming teachers
MSNBC ^ | May 25, 2022 | Zeeshan Aleem

Hardcore opponents of gun control in the U.S. often respond to school shootings by proposing to arm teachers or add armed security guards to schools. But the inability of police to stop the gunman at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, before he killed at least 19 children and two teachers Tuesday exposes the poor reasoning behind that proposal.

While all the details of the shooting are not yet clear, authorities’ accounts revealed that the gunman was confronted by multiple armed police officers — yet they were unable to stop him before he killed nearly two dozen people.

The gunman reportedly crashed his truck in a ditch near the campus before entering the school, and police officers arrived at the school after a report of that crash.

According to CBS News’ summary of Texas Department of Public Safety Lt. Christopher Olivarez’s account, the shooter “stormed Robb Elementary School in the small city of Uvalde shortly after crashing his car in the area and immediately engaged in gunfire with state troopers on the scene. The gunman shot several police officers and then locked himself in a classroom.”

-snip

According to various reports, after local officers called for backup, a specialized tactical unit made it into the classroom a full hour after the gunman entered the school, and an agent of an elite law enforcement unit was involved in killing the gunman. (That agent was injured in the process.)

Given those details, I find it increasingly impossible to understand how one could believe that the solution to school shootings is arming teachers or having a security guard protecting every school. If a group of police officers couldn’t stop a shooter, then why would we expect an individual teacher or security guard to do better?

No, I’m living in a world where those that carry train to be effective when they have to be. One individual teacher would have to get lucky against an armored opponent (without training, mind you). Two, three or more need a lot less luck.

A question for you: Are those 2 teachers less dead for not having weapons with which to resist?

Apparently the school doors were unlocked, as well as the door to the classroom. That is basic stuff to secure the school that was not done.

That's not only a fact, it's a deadly mistake. AND, the school resource officer was nowhere to be found.

There are CRASE (Citizen Response to Active Shooter Event) classes typically taught by local law enforcement resources.

There were no cops that confronted him per the latest information. Went straight into an unlocked door unconfronted.

This article was already garbage - seriously - how ridiculous is it to use as a school with unarmed staff as an example of how armed staff is not effective? But it is even more garbage as the claimed facts are apparently not true.

Get your kids out of public school which are dangerous to begin with. Most teachers are leftists and indoctrinate, not teach, and who aren’t going to use a gun to begin with and are part of a union.
The U.S. is becoming Brazil 2.0 (probably worse)

Sounds like the only way to keep nuts from shooting schoolkids is to go ahead and shoot the kids now.

the gunman was confronted by multiple armed police officers — yet they were unable to stop him before he killed nearly two dozen people.

I have seen several videos of the police (wearing body armor and slung with AR-15s), arguing with, pushing, and threatening the parents, on at least two sides of the schoolyard.

It isn't that the police were "unable" to stop him -- they were UN-WILLING to confront him. Why, we don't yet know, and no excuse they come up with is going to satisfy those parents, or pass any common-sense reasoning.

Uvalde is a city and the county seat of Uvalde County, Texas, United States. The population was 15,214 at the 2020 census. (Wikipedia)

Uvalde County is a county located in the U.S. state of Texas. As of the 2020 census, its population was 24,564. (Wikipedia)

There were city and county police in those videos. Those cops are never going to be able to live in the town or the county. Those people are going to vote out the mayor and the sheriff, and whatever other elected officials get in the way, and there is going to be legal Hell to pay for their cowardice and incompetence.

In 1999, during the Columbine fiasco, there were few cell phones, and none with video.

This fiasco was captured by cell phone video and audio, and many videos are being seen all over the world.

What a bunch of sniveling union pukes. I do hope the parents and citizens of the area have no mercy on these worthless commie pizzants.

“44% of all mass school killings are by homosexuals.

They make up 3% of the population. “

Please cite your source and don’t scrimp on the definitions :) Thank you. (It would be an important fact if it stands up, but it also could be the kind of thing that some troll who wants to discredit FR would inject).

People toss around the same positive correlation to mass school shooters about street drug use, bully victimization, mental illness, SSRIs / psychoactive medications, computer game addiction, social network addiction, and no father in the home. All of which are likely correlated with each other. (And at least three true here.)

Also, if the homosexuality thing is true, why do you think it is so? Isn’t homosexuality now culturally normalized? ( Maybe thats not true for “out and proud gays” in lower grades at a small town school).

Also, does anyone have insight on why an 18 year old who is out of school is attacking elementary school kids, not the high school kids? That strikes me as the salient fact.

When my daughter was in Elementary School it turned out she was really being bullied by a couple boy classmates, which shocked me. Not flirt bullied. Weaker and different bullied with hitting. In front of teachers and her bus driver. It turned out the ringleader was the youngest son in a white trash family where his older brothers bullied him and the parents didn’t stop it. He couldn’t stop their bullying of him, but he could pass it along to my daughter and thereby rationalize his own suffering and exposed weakness I guess. He couldn’t stop it but he could save it up, and release it on my daughter. Just shit that flows downhill.

Coming back to the tragedy at hand, is it perhaps because a weak kid who was bullied all through school ( could be a flaming homosexual), who had no father figure around but Mom’s disinterested boyfriend ( who didn’t like him, says they didn’t speak to each other) and got very little mothering either, found people much weaker and bullied them more mercilessly? And when he got to the top (out of school), really eject it all way downhill to Elementary school?

All just speculation built upon speculation, it’s just the big IF. But following that “if so” or “if sometimes”, consider the stupidity and dangerousness of teachers trying to tease any little bit of a student’s sexual identity difference out into the open to classmates as early as possible. And also how stupid and dangerous to convince schoolchildren they are total victims of a punishing system which is hopeless for their kind. (The two themes of organizer teachers.) I predict 10 of this kind of school attacks in 2032, when today’s woke victim elementary class is graduating. If not by firearms, then bladed weapons, fire, or something. And possibly by teams (ringleaders and followers) of like minded boys and a few girls.

Not every teacher, but every school has some teachers who are capable of handling firearms.
I never owned a firearm until couple of years ago. Never had any formal training. First time I went to a gun range I set the target at 30 feet distance. I fired 25 rounds from 30 feet away. Guess what? Every one of my bullets had landed inside a 6 inch circle. May be because I have broken 80 many times on 18 holes? If I can shoot like that I am positive so can some teachers from schools.
I can disassemble my 9mm and clean it and reassemble it. No formal training needed. Guns are not rocket science.

Maybe instead of hiring females, both skinny, fat, gay, trans and leftard, they could hire Veterans. How could education be anything but better, if a man with real tessicles were in the class? Imagine some smart mouthed group of teenagers, like those we see all the time on the WWW, coming up against SGT Friday?

Arm these guys, and force the worthless Union members out of a job and you can have a win/win.

The only times I have felt unsafe in my life is during my hours at work as a teacher. I have always thought about getting a conceal/carry license and coming to school armed (and ready). I would not pursue active shooters , but stay in my room during lockdowns ready to defend my life and the lives of my students and leave it for a jury to figure things out .

Some of the children were left to bleed out...

If the police weren’t up to the job they should have given parents their Kevlar and let them go get their kids.
