A previously unknown stone circle has been uncovered close to a Cornish town. The discovery took place as archaeological surveys of Castilly Henge, near Bodmin, have been carried out as part of a project to conserve and better understand the site.
New research by Historic England and the Cornwall Archaeology Unit (CAU) revealed a previously unknown stone circle inside the ancient henge. The sheer scale of it can be seen in pictures shared by Historic England in this article.
The site has now been fenced, allowing it to be grazed by animals without damaging the structure at the site which is one of 40 scheduled monuments protected by the Cornwall Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
The oval enclosure is 225ft long by 205ft wide (68m by 62m) and is believed to have been built during the late Neolithic period (circa 3,000 to 2,500 BC), forming an amphitheatre-like setting for gatherings and ritual activities. Previous researchers have suggested that the site was used as a theatre (Playing Place or plen-an-guary) in the Middle Ages, and then as a battery during the English Civil War...
The surveys, which will be detailed in a Historic England report released later this year, revealed traces of a long-buried stone circle in the centre of the henge and detailed information about the henge’s original form and its modification over time. This is only the second henge with a stone circle discovered in Cornwall.

Some more to be posted later in the week.
Have long wondered if these were actually built for holding livestock.
Brilliant!
Pretty crappy circle. Must have been made by ancient Dems!
Weren’t they built to time the seasons astronomically? People all over the world were really good at following the stars back in ancient times. It’s not like there was much else to do at night.
The Time Team would have figured it all out in just three days.
It was built by straight cis white males and therefore a racist, sexist, homophonic, transphobic monument to white supremacy.
Since we don't know who built this stuff we can't be sure they were straight. Perhaps they were all gay, who knows? It would explain why they disappeared leaving no known descendants.
"Ritual activities!"
Someone said you couldn’t throw a stone in England without hitting an archaeological treasure. I’m starting to believe it.
That is the first thing I thought of when looking at that photo. A giant toilet seat. If they poke around in it they might find the ancestor of Tidy Bowl Man.
Definitely a hinge
But can they really be white supremacists when they've never met anybody who wasn't white?
