As Coloradans await the final decision from the U.S. Supreme Court on the fate of Roe v. Wade, abortion rights advocates are preparing for what they consider an inevitable influx of patients from out of state.
According to data from the state health department, that uptick of abortion patients from outside of Colorado is already happening.
From 2017 to 2019, 11% of abortions in Colorado were performed on patients from out of state. In 2020, it went to 13% and was nearly 14% last year, according to the state health department. That accounts for 1,560 procedures out of the state’s total of 11,580 abortions in 2021.
Ultimately, how Colorado abortion providers will be affected by the court’s decision is a matter of numbers, geography and a patchwork of laws.
Take, for example, Texas, which is just a panhandle away from Colorado. In 2019, there were 57,275 reported abortions in that state, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. That’s a rate of 9.5 abortions per 1,000 women ages 15-44. In 2021, Texas passed a law banning abortion after six weeks.
Neta Meltzer with Planned Parenthood of the Rocky Mountains said about 45 percent of Texans seeking abortion after that law was enacted went to Oklahoma to get them. This week, the governor of Oklahoma — where, in 2019, there were 4,995 abortions or 6.4 per 1,000 women ages 15-44 — signed a similar early pregnancy abortion ban.
“That's a staggering volume of patients to absorb, and now (Oklahoma) will no longer be an option for those patients,” Meltzer said. “We are already seeing Texas patients because Colorado is another one of the destinations that they go to to receive that care.”

FReepers in Colorado you really need to get pro life people in office
A Mecca.
It will become a Mecca of abortuaries.
States choosing to make infanticide illegal should pass law affirming the right too life of the unborn. Then criminalize any attempt to cross the state line for the purpose of violating the civil rights of the unborn.
It might be challenged on Constitutional grounds but if the demoncrats choose to challenge it, they would have to sue in the full knowledge that the case likely would end up being heard by the same SCOTUS that overturned Roe-v-Wade. And is that not a sweet irony.
California is about to legalize abortion, thirty days after birth, AB 2223. Calling it perinatal.
Let them do their thing. They’ll have their own discussions which will get more local as well as serious.
So, that’s how Federalism is supposed to work.
One way things are NOT supposed to work is the attempt to terrorize and influence Justices.
Judges are not supposed to be political creatures, but to follow the law and interpret it.
These ‘protesters’ bothering Justices in their homes should be arrested.
Ever think this is mid term election politics?
They have to get people excited about something.
They need a topic which gets them in the news, which allows the leaders to show action.
Abortion is a good one!
LGBTQ is actually on the decline as far as support goes and it’s also an issue where you just can’t stand and do much more without being ridiculous.
We already de facto have special programs throwing gobs of money at them (through Ryan White) which no one else gets (cancer, heart, diabetes...). We already made them a de facto protected class, gave them full equal standing with heterosexual child bearing couples, have homo affirming curricula is schools, a complete pro gay media (always a positive representation)... This just isn’t an issue where you can stand for anything anymore without being a weirdo because the homo agenda already got everything they wanted and more...
Colorado was taken over by California emigrants decades ago.
“Colorado was taken over by California emigrants decades ago.”
I saw it starting when I lived there in the late 70’s, once upon a time, it was a fantastic place to live.
I think that’s exactly what it is. They need something to bring people out to vote.
Colorado. Isn’t that the state where they have all those mass shootings?
Colorado! The Infanticide State!!! Sounds good!
Present your abortion receipt at the cannabis dispensary and receive 25% off your order.
Once we were forced to go to all mail-in ballot elections several years ago it as like someone flipped a switch, and the state quickly went 100% blue after that. It’s virtually impossible for a Republican to win here now.
Coincidence? Absolutely not.
(Singing)
Rocky Mountain die,
Colorado
I suppose on the bright side, then God’s judgment will fall on only some of the US then.
Colorado, the mountains of murdered babies state where the streets run red with baby blood and the nights are filled with the screams from ex mother’s nightmares at what they’ve done. Traumatized for life they go home to regret their visit to the murder state forever.
They should make a billboard. SMH. Their slogan: “Come with a belly bump, leave with a heart lump”.
“If Roe v. Wade is overturned, Colorado will become an island”
Could’ve ended the headline there.
