Pieces of ‘fireball’ meteor that exploded over Mississippi are being found, NASA says

Meteorites are not ‘flaming rocks of doom,' NASA says

The “bright fireball” was traveling at 35,000 mph when it exploded at 8:03 a.m. with the “energy equivalent of 3 tons of TNT,” according to NASA Meteor Watch, the agency's project that tracks fireball activity.

“Existing law states that any meteorites belong to the owner of the property on which they fell; out of respect for the privacy of those in the area, we will not disclose the locations of these finds,”

And finding anything of value is likely harder than you think.

“The pieces from this object were way too small to leave a crater. Unlike what you see in the movies, meteorites are not ‘flaming rocks of doom’ that blast holes in the ground. In fact, you can pick one up right after it hits ground. So no smoking rocks in small craters.”

Before coming back we visited my wife’s 100-y-o uncle who was on a destroyer in Pearl harbor when it was bombed. His was the only destroyer to clear the harbor during the attack.

Very cool! What amazing things he must have seen throughout his life. And he is a true hero.

He had just come back from 8 days in the hospital so I don’t think he’ll be telling his stories much longer.

God bless him. 🙏

I could tell you what I did during the war but it was pretty boring.

Eat, sleep, ... cry.

Sometimes I did that, but I was stateside. It was the first war that the news film could be watched nationwide the next day.

It’s good to see you again, Bob! You’ve been missed. I suppose we should all take better aim, then, right?

😜

Robert Heinlein suggested that it was advisable to avoid strong drink, for it could induce you to shoot at revenuers, and miss!

Heinlein was right about a lot of things. Although, not having put many of his ideas into practice, I can’t really vouch for that.

Good morning. Happy Twosday.

Life is slow in the small town. The princess seems to have decided to eat her food, although a little less of it in a day than she used to eat. We’ll see what the vet thinks later this month.

I haven’t solved the Wordle yet. I’m a bit stumped. I’ll give it a rest and try with fresh eyes.

Kitteh says he’s ready to owrk!

Good morning. I hope you had a restful night.

I have no idea what this day will bring, but I suspect it won’t bring much. We’re supposed to have sunshine this morning and I’m thinking how odd that will be.

With luck, I’ll get a new doorknob on my new door today. I still need to order a peephole so I can see who’s ringing the bell.

Excellent news about the sunshine and the doorknob. It’s good to have a doorknob! It’s sunny here right now, too.

Yep, it was a tough one alright! I had it narrowed down to two words and chose the wrong one. So I start at the bottom again and climb back up. I mean, there’s only one way to go from here, right?

There IS a doorknob, but it’s broken, so it works when it wants to.

I’m going to ask FS to put the peephole in because it’s taken me 10 months to get the door replaced. How long would it take for the peephole, at that rate?

The sunshine here is weird and I think it has to do with the amount of moisture in the air. It’s a glaring sort of sunshine, not at all like the sunshine in the Desert Southwest. I can’t even stand to go to the dumpster without sunglasses.

Ten months. It’s been that long? Seems like a blur.
