Pieces of ‘fireball’ meteor that exploded over Mississippi are being found, NASA says

Meteorites are not ‘flaming rocks of doom,' NASA says

The “bright fireball” was traveling at 35,000 mph when it exploded at 8:03 a.m. with the “energy equivalent of 3 tons of TNT,” according to NASA Meteor Watch, the agency's project that tracks fireball activity.

“Existing law states that any meteorites belong to the owner of the property on which they fell; out of respect for the privacy of those in the area, we will not disclose the locations of these finds,”

And finding anything of value is likely harder than you think.

“The pieces from this object were way too small to leave a crater. Unlike what you see in the movies, meteorites are not ‘flaming rocks of doom’ that blast holes in the ground. In fact, you can pick one up right after it hits ground. So no smoking rocks in small craters.”

Neither my daughter nor my son play it. I think they think it may not be challenging enough. But trust me: it IS challenging!

Yes, Jake went out on a binge while we were at Envirothon last weekend, but he came back in about 24 hours. He seemed okay at the time, but he’s a little poorly now. Tom the Son has taken him to the vet.

A slowly developing infection or tooth decay seem the most likely issues. The former would be cheaper!

Jake has an infection. He got an antibiotic shot and an anti-inflammatory, and now he hates us.

Any excuse, eh, Jake? (Thanks for taking him, Tom!)

At least it’s not a tooth problem this time!

Taking out rotten teeth requires anesthesia, and that’s expensive.

I like it because I don’t always “win.” Some days, I don’t even “show.” Just a big fat “X” where my score is supposed to be!

Ha.

I was embarrassed enough the few times I tried to do the NYT crossword.

Aawww…poor boy. He’ll probably milk this for all it’s worth.

He’s demanding more food to recover from the trauma of the Unacceptable Receptace.

At least you tried it! I wouldn’t dare. I’m sure I would hear little, tiny giggles as the printer’s ink on the clues laughed at me, hysterically. No thanks...not a shame I could live down any time soon. ;o]

I think you’re right, Allegra. Jake is going to milk this as long as he can for as much as he can get out of it. Especially as the Unacceptable Receptacle is such a humiliating experience for such a macho gato.

Ah, yes, the Unacceptable Receptacle.

Mine sings me the song of his people on the rare occasion he has to be imprisoned in his.

The.

Whole.

Time.

Yes, the late, Great PV did that for us, no matter how long or how short the trip was. It also didn’t matter if the UR was covered or not. As soon as he was inside, the song began. I had no idea he knew so many verses!

I’m told Jake was extremely vocal about the whole thing. He also gave the vet an unsolicited stool sample.

It’s the kind of thing you can duck in and do for just a minute, which is nice. My kids play these games — they’re practically endless. Always saying, “I’ll wrap up once I finish this level / mission / race / whatever,” and then — an hour later — the whatever is still going. My only failure is being too nice to just yank the cord outta the wall.
