These Are The Old Car Features That Should Make A Comeback
Jalopnik ^ | 19 April 2022 | Adam Ismail

Here's to the days of big windows, bumpers built for bumping and foot-operated controls.

Round, Sealed Headlights Yeah, I know they’re not the greatest aerodynamically, but replacing a bulb on a modern car sometimes requires partially disassembly of the front end just to get at the bulb.

My co-worker just spend $225 to replace ONE BULB on her Acura

Amber Rear Turn Signals The safety of tri-colored tail lights. Red for stop. Amber for turn or hazard. White for reverse.

Replaceable Head Units Or better yet, just make it an actual iPad so I can replace it with a better one that runs an app of the car’s software.

Imagine if you could pop off that dumb less-useful-than-a-tablet tablet on top of any given Mazda’s dashboard and fit an iPad that actually works.

Not-Power Windows Crank windows. More reliable than power windows, much finer control over movements, and I don’t have to turn the ignition on to use it.

Why just bring back features, why not the whole car.

The sound of an old school V-8 can’t be matched.

Shame that a whole generation will never hear that sound.

There are HUGE salt mines near Cayuga Lake in Lansing near Ithaca.

Interesting tidbit. You can store energy with compressed air. Salt caverns are ideal for storing compressed air because the salt is impermeable and you don’t get much air leakage into the salt. “Compressed Air Energy Storage” (CAES) was originally proposed as a way to balance electrical power day to night. You pump up the compressed air at night when excess capacity is available and let the compressed air out in the daytime when you need more power.

Neither can a straight six Chevy with a split manifold. Ford six and Chevy six with split manifolds, we could tell them apart a mile away and you could hear them that far back in they day. {:~)

Yes, on the Challenger they did good work to try to make maintain the body lines. Not so much the Charger.

I hope that electric cars allow a return to some of the great styling of the 50s and 60s. The electric chassis should allow great remakes of classic cars! How about dropping a 1955 Chevy Nomad Wagon body on an EV chassis. How about a 1953 Studebaker Commander hardtop? Of course, a 1940 Ford coupe would be fun. A Jaguar XKE would be incredible! So would the early Corvettes. You might even be able to create the bodies using 3D printing. What’s your dream EV classic car?

Most headlights are now LED, they will probably outlast the car.

Experience says they don't.

No doubt. It has the late style front grilling but the older (euro) front bumper. Non federalized.

There are salt deposits all along the south side of Lake Erie, Lake Ontario and even directly under the city of Detroit.

My company buys about 600 trucks a year of bagged rock salt from American Rock Salt in Mt Morris, NY (south of Rochester).

Syracuse was named for the “saltine warrior”. There are large deposits just on the south side of Syracuse, NY too.

“Syracuse was named for the “saltine warrior”.”

That’s an interesting tidbit! I used to live east of Syracuse in Fayetteville for a short while. Spent five years in Ithaca, too.

I went to SUNY Morrisville my first two years of college. We always drove through Fayetteville on our way there and back.

Then I went to SUNY ESF and Syracuse University my junior and senior year. Right on the south side of the Carrier Dome. Lived in the SW side of Syracuse for two years right near the Fayetteville border.

When I was one year old to four years old I lived in South Lansing, NY. Right on Cayuga Lake north of Ithaca. We moved to Orchard Park(home of the Buffalo Bills) when I was four.

About three years ago, I spent $2,500 on a full paint job on my “98 Civic. Included in that price were two completely new head light units with perfectly clear plastic covers.

It looks like it is new

Nope, all cars forevermore will look like streamlined jellybeans due to CAFE standards and the government insatiable fetish with “efficiency.” CAFE will have to be extended to EVs soon.

That is funny. Almost everyone that drove older cars back in the 1970s & 80s in NYS had floor boards that eventually rusted out. Everyone had to repair their floor with pieces of sheet metal.

I never saw one with that many license plates though!
