Hitting Disney where it hurts: Florida GOP threatens to strip Walt Disney World of its right to build anything it wants inside its theme park as feud over 'Don't Say Gay' bill escalates

Some Republican legislators in Florida are considering punishing Walt Disney World for taking a public stand against the so-called 'Don't Say Gay' bill by repealing a 55-year law that allows the company to govern itself.

Florida House Rep. Spencer Roach tweeted on Wednesday that lawmakers held two meetings this week to discuss revoking the 1967 Reedy Creek Improvement Act, which he said 'allows Disney to act as its own government.'

Spencer, a Republican, added: 'If Disney wants to embrace woke ideology, it seems fitting that they should be regulated by Orange County.'

The 1967 act, which was signed by then-Gov Claude Kirk, a Republican, created the Reedy Creek Improvement District, which encompasses about 25,000 acres in Orange and Osceola counties.

The district is governed by its 19 landowners, the biggest of them being Disney World. It is responsible for overseeing land use and providing essential public services, including fire protection, emergency medical services, water services, electricity, sanitation. The district also operates and maintains all public roads and bridges.

Know what fights are worth fighting. Really who cares if Disney is bitching about your law? They’ll shut up and move on in a few months. They’re not gonna pack up and ship out, too much sunk cost. The way these things always work, continuing the fight rewards no one. Turning it into a direct fight against Disney means going into the trenches with a company that has more money than your state does, more lawyers than your state does, and an established history of winning cases and changing laws to benefit them.

Florida GOP has the law they want. Turning that win into a loss does them no good.

I’m not swayed. I’m pointing out the facts. Look up what Disney has done to America’s copyright laws. They know this ground.

“And that’s all after Disney’s lawyers have dragged this out in the courts.”

And we will be treated to years of hearings where Disney is fighting for the right to groom children into perversion. Every deposition destroys their image and brand just that one tiny bit more.

Look up “Pyrrhic Victory”.

Just funding it TO normal municipal levels is more money than Florida has been spending.

Disney is not what Walt had... Florida needs to repeal Disney laws and tax them... Maybe DW will close and someone could build AmericaLand or TrumpLand... 🤓

No. Disney will be fighting that a deal is a deal. Nothing about the Florida gay law will be coming up in those trials at all.

Sure you can do a low cost alternative. And you can also contract out so someone to do it. And most of all, it’ll be a cheap as the local government can get away with, and Disney will have no veto.

Oh the hell it won’t. It will be the centerpiece of every article, news story, and opinion discussion of it. It will be the entire reason for the case regardless of what the pleadings are. Bottom line, it is Disney going to court to protect their ability to sodomize and groom children.

That is what the public will hear.

“Turning it into a direct fight against Disney means going into the trenches with a company that has more money than your state does . . .”

That is an interesting comment. May we see your data?

I would like for you to provide the balance sheets so we can see net worth of each.

I know Disney has 30,000 plus acres.

And Florida owns 3.8 million acres.

Florida has 15 seaports on their balance sheet. How many does Disney own?

Florida owns the land under every river in the state and all the water above. How many rivers does Disney own?

How many gallons of water does Disney own outright that is not under the ultimate control of the state? Isn’t that number close to zero?

Show me the balance sheets.

No, by taking the perk away they remain responsible, but now they have the burden to strictly meet the building code. They can remain “self governing’ just not to the point of skirting the codes.

If any Republicans are considering it, it is a very bad idea. Rather they should ask a rhetorical question: Does Disney allow members of its cast to secretly talk about sexual lifestyle choices with the small children of guests without informing the parents?

If Disney says: Yes we allow that...then I figure their customers should know.

But if Disney says: No, we do not allow that...then we should ask why Disney has their own "don't say gay" policy in their parks but yet objects to the government having one in their schools.
