Hitting Disney where it hurts: Florida GOP threatens to strip Walt Disney World of its right to build anything it wants inside its theme park as feud over 'Don't Say Gay' bill escalates

Some Republican legislators in Florida are considering punishing Walt Disney World for taking a public stand against the so-called 'Don't Say Gay' bill by repealing a 55-year law that allows the company to govern itself.

Florida House Rep. Spencer Roach tweeted on Wednesday that lawmakers held two meetings this week to discuss revoking the 1967 Reedy Creek Improvement Act, which he said 'allows Disney to act as its own government.'

Spencer, a Republican, added: 'If Disney wants to embrace woke ideology, it seems fitting that they should be regulated by Orange County.'

The 1967 act, which was signed by then-Gov Claude Kirk, a Republican, created the Reedy Creek Improvement District, which encompasses about 25,000 acres in Orange and Osceola counties.

The district is governed by its 19 landowners, the biggest of them being Disney World. It is responsible for overseeing land use and providing essential public services, including fire protection, emergency medical services, water services, electricity, sanitation. The district also operates and maintains all public roads and bridges.

They should pass a special 50% tax assessment against any amusement park with gross proceeds over $100,000,000 per year.

Just an observation, that the outrage over this law, started up after the bill was passed. It’s not as if activists and Disney Corporate had any position on this as it was going through the legislative process.

After the fact, when all these LGBT type activists decided that this bill was a crime against humanity, that’s when Disney Corporate decided that they should make it Corporate policy to oppose and work for repeal of the law.

I point it out, because this law bans discussion of all this LGBT business in grades K through 3. Kids that young shouldn’t be discussing this in the first place. Why do activists want to discuss these matters with such young kids? We should ask that question.

This law is being portrayed as a rollback of gay “civil rights” and other such hyperbole. Some people are prone to exaggeration, in my opinion.

Are we supposed to believe this story or not, or is it only anything to do with Ukraine?

That is because Disney hoped to avoid any controversy while it was on the way to being passed. Hoping that it would not pass. Then when it did - “Woke time!”

The “don’t say gay” reminds me of the “hands up don’t shoot” lie that was pushed and pushed until almost everyone believed it was true. The same thing is happening here. It is a relentless twisting of the truth.

People treat government like a damned reality game show.

They won on their bill. Why do they have to go out of their way to “punish” their political enemies.

Standing on someone’s throat is not good policy.

Well I see right there how Disney will say “FU” on that. Since they maintain the roads and provide all the public services. “Oh you want to control this area, OK, we’ll start by laying off all our public service workers, and here’s how much rent you’ll have to pay for those buildings”.

Disney can govern itself, the article states.

That’s one enabling that current law makers can thank former law makers for.

And Disney of Kalifornication is governing the whole of Disney..

No wonder Kalifornicators running Disney have their undergarments twisted..how dare Florida law makers anger their gaystapo governing body

I remember Orlando before Disney and I liked it better that way.

Saw a documentary some years ago about how dw changed that town....every living member of the city council including the mayor at the time that voted for getting dw to come to Orlando was interviewed......and every single one of them stated that if they knew back then what was going to happen and what they know now they would all have voted against it.

Orlando gave up an unbelievable amount of real estate, tax breaks and many other perks just to get ‘em to put their parks there......they all now regret it.

Discussion is not banned.

If discussion is not banned, why are the activists so against this law?

“Some people are prone to exaggeration, in my opinion.”

I think one of the reasons they weren’t being forward in the attack on the bill prior to it being signed and placed is that their defense against the bill was that it wasn’t happening so why make a law concerning identifying and stopping it. But when it went into effect, it became a reality that the thing they were saying didn’t happen was going to be stopped whether it happened or not. Then it became an issue because they couldn’t get the people (voters) to be pushed off task. And they are now saying it is wrong to stop it even after they said there was nothing to stop. They looking very stupid or dishonest...take your pick. They want to stop the stop, not the act that didn’t happen even though it did.

I had no idea. ‘Act’ or not, I’m not seeing the legality of this arrangement from multiple aspects. But Florida may be unique in this respect.

Look, we don’t need talking or grandstanding. Just do it. Announcing what you might do will only further agitate the leftist lunatics. Why wave red flags in front of these people. Just drop the hammer and be done with it.

Yes, I think you are on to something. They want to say this bill was unneeded, because it restricts something that isn’t happening. But it does seem as if they want to indulge in the actions which are to be restricted.
