Weekly Garden Thread - March 19-25, 2022 [Favorite Spring Flowers Edition]

The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.

If you have specific question about a plant/problem you are having, please remember to state the Growing Zone where you are located.

This thread is a non-political respite. No matter what, you won’t be flamed, and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.

It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table Recipes, Preserving, Good Living - there is no telling where it will go - and that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us! Send a Private Message to Diana in Wisconsin if you'd like to be added to our New & Improved Ping List.

NOTE: This is a once a week Ping List. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest to Gardeners are welcomed any time!

One of the quasi-farm ladies at the local Farmers Market crows hard neck garlic.
I quit since she always has plenty to sell...

Yeah we used to grow corn, but found a place that sells some really good sweet corn, so we stopped raising it ourselves mostly. We stil. Grow a few rows in, but not like we used to. We can it for the winter months for soups, so we need quite a bit, so we just buy it now. We keep, the rest of,he garden now for, things we enjoy raising like green beans, squash etc. Some things are jusy easier and more convenient to,buy if you find a good source for them.

M.M. Glad you can get onions to grow well! I purchased Stuttgarter 2 times. I can grow leeks, but onions do not like my soil I think. (Or they do not get enough sun or water here in KS.) I have Estonian red Garlic, very mild, but with large cloves that store well. (Have a braid in my garage.) I think that they were from Territorial seeds or possibly Baker Creek.

This is about the 5th year I have planted them from the original 1/2 lb purchase. Fifty bulbs from the Fall planting are coming up right now!

I planted peas Thursday, and sprinkled some EZ straw over them. (Seeds removed) It rained yesterday should be warm all week so should work well. I need to get hoops and insect barriers over them so they can grow enough that the squirrels don't dig the plants for the peas. I'll go out today and plant spinach, turnips, radishes, maybe several Rutabagas. I also need to get some watering lines laid out and ready to go because I do not want to stand for 2 hours watering the garden!

I need to deal with slugs in my garden this year.

The war is on.

I never had luck with onions before either but they seem to work well here (NH).

For both my onions and garlic, I plant the rows, then lay down landscape fabric between the rows, and cover them with straw. It keeps the moisture steady and the weeds down. About once a month I have to go through and pull a few weeds, but otherwise, they are maintenance free.

Made it to today! Coffee and the Saturday Morning Garden Thread were my “mental carrots” I had dangling to get through last week.

So - little “accident”. Went to the local garden center on the 7th, slipped in some water, & landed full weight on my right knee - broke the patella in half (2 separate pieces - I saw the x-ray). I had surgery yesterday to repair it. I should be totally good to go/back to normal in 3 months (by July). Meanwhile, I can certainly start seeds in peat pots and I have 2 offers of help to plant things in the garden.

My seeds from Pinetree Gardens are arriving today - yay! I’m now buying eggs from the neighbors (after the fox got all but one of our layers). Looks like with Avian flu or whatever is going around, a lot of commercial flocks are being destroyed & egg prices will be going up.

My niece has pigs again - one is a Gloucester Old Spot - she’ll be raising them for meat & also to help preserve the breed. I looked them up & I think they’ll be nice pigs for her to raise - I can’t wait for bacon, bacon, bacon & lard!!

Happy Saturday to all!

Well, I have been using straw, but not landscape fabric. I have some paper that was used in dunnage and maybe I will try that aroud plants and cover it with the straw. I have changed the layout of my garden to make it as easy as possible to run the irrigation. (It does get dry and hot here in the summer!)

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

I have a fairly complex Celtic cable pattern I’m working on - figured I’d have plenty of time to do it, being laid up. Very weird, but I just cannot get enough concentration going to work on it. The low level ache (sometimes pain) was just too distracting. I’m hoping in a week or so I’ll be able to work on it again. I am going to have to wait until I’m off the pain pills ... LOL!

Could you please put me on your list? Even though I live up here, about 150 south of the Arctic Circle, I still have several big gardens and greenhouses, and it’s something that I love to do. It was -1.1 F this morning, though, with three feet of snow on the ground, so planting out is still two months away.

Good idea.

We have a LOT of fire flies around here in the woods.

A lot of the suggestions I saw for slugs were to use dilute ammonia to kill the eggs, and then to snip the slugs in half and they cannibalize each other.

Then there’s always the beer route.

I just need to make sure that everything is as set as can be before our vacation in July, where I’ll be gone for a week and a half.

There are some DYI homemade slug traps on you tube.

I’ll be giving those a try.

Something ate up all but one of my pea seedlings I planted out. Saw several chewed off at the top so I put some field fence around it. That ruled out the chicken because even though she can fly a little, the opening at the top was only a foot wide. Also no chicken prints in the soil. My field fence doesn’t have smaller openings on the bottom and I did see a rabbit on the property for the first time last year so I suspect that’s what it is. No real bugs out yet. I’ve got some chicken wire I can wrap around the field fence. Will do that today and see if that last pea seedling gets eaten.

I moved the chicken coop up close to the house. Still trying to get the hen in there so I can lock her up. She hasn’t been sleeping in it since I moved it. Would have made it real easy. Just go out after dark and close the door. Going to fill the feeder and watch and wait.

I wrap chicken wire around tomato cages to protect them from varmints, however, the woodchucks can climb those and eat the tops off.

Never caught one in the act, but it was the only explanation for the chewed off tops of pea plants.

Got the hen locked in the coop just now so that will rule her out. Also put a cage of chicken wire around that last pea. I’ve got a dog pen I can use the fence from for the front yard garden area. It’s already got chicken wire loosely wired around the inside of the field fence from when I used it for a short time for the LGD puppies. Will steal that fence before I plant anything else out. Got greens ready to go in the ground. Might just replant pea seeds directly in the ground at this point.

Also need to get some fertilized eggs from the neighbor. This hen I have has been known to go broody. She’s a little survivor though. Hawks got the other six chickens 2 years ago. She’d raise up some smart babies I think.
