Weekly Garden Thread - February 19-25, 2022 [Garden DIY Edition]

The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.

If you have specific question about a plant/problem you are having, please remember to state the Growing Zone where you are located.

This thread is a non-political respite. No matter what, you won’t be flamed, and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.

It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table Recipes, Preserving, Good Living - there is no telling where it will go - and that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us! Send a Private Message to Diana in Wisconsin if you'd like to be added to our New & Improved Ping List.

NOTE: This is a once a week Ping List. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest to Gardeners are welcomed any time!

I am doing alfalfa sprouts for eating - no soil. I won't start indoor seeds for awhile yet, usually late April. (in Michigan with NO GREENHOUSE). download-4

Greetings from southern New Hampshire, where a warm snap this past week got rid of much of our snow and ice, while giving us a shot in the arm of enthusiasm for the approaching spring and gardening season!

I was able to get rid of most of the snow and ice on the decks and all of it on our driveway. I also was successful in restoring our pellet stove to full functionality! The deceased has been brought to life, much to the chagrin of the service puke who thought he would sucker this dumb rube into disposing of the old pellet stove and buy a new one from him!

I bought some seeds today! Pole beans, bush beans, wax beans and yellow pear tomatoes! Household Six said I did good. I also picked up additional PEX piping so that I can run the additional water lines to her potting counters as well as to a sill cock outside, where one is really needed, year round. That is my project for the next warm day.

Have Faith! Spring is coming!

I’ve got three ‘Patriot’ Blueberry bushes coming my way soon, too.

I may use them as landscape shrubs, as they get pretty big, and have nice fall color, too.

We went to Chichen Itza which was pretty cool. I was saddened by how poorly they maintain the grounds around these masterpieces. Lots of trash and junk floating in any body of water. :(

We were there in 1980. No trash at all. We climbed it to the top. The steps are so steep I had to come down backwards and hang onto the chain. Hubby of course came down the right way and quickly too even with his big feet. I think the vertigo got the best of me.

Years ago I was doing wintertime seed starting under
fluorescent lights in the basement. Tomato plants
and pepper plants and such. To start the outdoor
vegetable garden in May with nearly full grown plants.

I was working well for the gardening, but not for the house.
After a number of years of it, the basement became
infested with fungus gnats and - somehow - southern
crickets. So the gardening went back to outside and the
detached garage.

The gnats were annoying, but the southern crickets were
a menace. Brown crickets that bite - HARD - right through
your socks.

But just a few pots on window sills won't cause anything like
the earlier mess.

Southern Cricket -
(Not to be confused with the southern cricket frog,
which is a different thing - a frog, not an insect.)

Ooops! Reminds me that I wanted to start some tomato plants. I figure if we have some of our garden here planted, that will tempt buyers when we list the house, and we can start our garden in PA at the same time as we will be back and forth regularly.

An established garden and attractive but easy-care landscaping is a HUGE selling point for the right buyer.

That, along with my small greenhouse, closed the deal on selling my other farm in about 15 minutes. ;)

Best Of Luck! :)

39F & snow showers yesterday; clear 50 today; clear 55 tomorrow, then...

Snow, with HIGHS of 7; -1; -2 M-T-W with 5-8” accumulation predicted.

Never, EVER trust the early-mid Febluberry thaw!

Meanwhile, I have my seed situation in hand; and the potted sweet potato is crawling all over the kitchen windowsill.

Wild turkeys are back, and got some corn this afternoon; they’ll really need it next few days.

Make the old, and lay in the colored pebbles to spell out the label.

Soil was Jello a couple of days ago here in MO. Getting more snow this week and once that melts, Jello again.

Clayey loam.

Nice when the right moisture level. Too wet = Jello. Too dry and it shrinks, cracks and gets hard as a brick. I have little pottery projects sitting around here that my kids made years ago. Just top soil squished into a shape but it retains that shape still.

It was another typical February week of weather here in Central Missouri. We had a nice warm-up, which melted off all of the snow we got last week, then it snapped off cold and we had two days of freezing rain, sleet, and snow. Now it’s just cold. Temps are expected to be in the lower 60°s today, and close to 70° tomorrow.

I ordered the corrugated polyethylene panels that I will need for the new greenhouse. Those were supposed to be here yesterday, but the nasty weather delayed shipment. I still need to hit the lumber yard and pick up the materials for the framing, but I’m not getting out on the roads with a trailer until all of the pack ice is gone.

Noticed yesterday that Lowe’s has their garden seed display set up. That means it is time to pull out the Jung’s catalog and make a list...

It was kinda’ cold this morning - 20F when I went to walk the dog & let the hens out. The coffee pot was turned on just before I stepped out the door so I could immediately have a hot cup upon coming back in.

The hens had not laid anything when I broke the ice on their water & let them out, but when I went back with a “treat” for them, one of the hens hopped out of the next box .... there was a fresh-out-of-the-hen very WARM egg in the box, so that immediately became a hand warmer in my pocket. A warm egg is one of my very favorite things .... a simple pleasure.

Anyway, this is my last (cold!) morning of dog/chicken sitting. Everyone is alive/well - no losses to predators.

I’ll be spending the rest of the day/week glued to my laptop screen, watching GPS and updates in the Iron Dog Group on FB. Iron Dog week is my very favorite part of “winter”.

One more thing .... any cucumber recommendations? I plant them for my folks (I’ll eat the very occasional one) so I don’t need anything super prolific .... nothing too small or too big, & tasty would be nice! I have some seeds planted the last 2 years (”muncher” cukes, I think) & I would like some fresh seeds for this year.

Look up, ‘Diva’ and ‘Sweeter Yet’ and ‘Summer Dance’ cucumbers and see what you think. :)
