City will pay up to $200 per gun during Saturday's buyback event at Winston-Salem Fairgrounds. No questions asked.

A gun buyback program approved by the Winston-Salem City Council last spring holds its first event on Saturday at the Winston-Salem Fairgrounds, with payments from $100 to $200 for guns turned in.

The “no questions asked” drive-thru event will take place from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the fairgrounds, city officials said, billing the event as 100% anonymous.

The city has held buybacks in the past, most recently in 2014, when city officials pronounced the event so successful that they ran out of money, had to issue vouchers, and later decided to set aside another $10,000 to hold a second event.

The effort is part of a broader crime-reduction plan approved by the city in 2021-22 budget negotiations.

Designating almost $1.4 million for special crime-reduction efforts, the plan includes money for a program designed to help ex-offenders, another to help young people with conflict resolution, more support for recreational programs at community centers and a pre-K boost designed to prevent crime in the long term.

The city has earmarked $50,000 for gun buyback efforts in the current fiscal year.

On Saturday, city officials will pay $200 for each gun considered an assault rifle, $150 for each handgun and $100 for each long gun.

Sellers have to put the guns in their car trunks before going to the fairgrounds. Police officers will be on hand to safely remove the guns from the trunks.

The state can’t buy something back that it never owned.

Looks like a lot of them were broken and useless. Payments would go to the purchase of new, working models.

I have a rusted frame from an Ethan Allen single shot pistol from from 1830’s.

Its sort of interesting but $200? Its just sitting in a drawer and it is not like it could be restored.

“Buy-backs” have bought airguns, inoperative firearms, and stolen guns.

It occurs to me that you could make a Home Depot run this morning collecting all of the parts to make four ZIP guns, assemble them; tell your mother-in-law she can make an extra $800 for Christmas shopping, all’s she needs to do is drop these pipe fittings off at the location of the gun buyback. ;-)

What other private property does that city perceive they hold title to? Are they going to buyback your car? Your wife’s wedding ring? Your tools? Your computer? Your investments?

Since firearms are an inanimate object, how about a buyback program on those persons committing crime? If good cash awards were offered to turn in or locate bad guys... maybe that would have a reduction in crime. Imagine the horror of driving a culture that wants to stop criminals?

The problem is that it would work, and would be quickly followed by cries of racism or some other nonsensical BS.

The city is acting as a fence for stolen guns.

I considered selling my weapons “back” to the government, but after a background check and thorough investigation into the buyer, I determined the buyer has a history of violence and is mentally unstable. Big risk to society. Secondly, How can you sell anything back to someone who never owned it? If anything, the government should be selling their weapons back to us, the people since we paid for them.

This would be the answer to the fed's but it'll do in this case.
