The Monthly Fiber Arts Thread is a monthly gathering of people that love yarn and fabric of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first project, to experienced fiber artists and beyond, we would love to hear from you.
It is impossible to hijack the Monthly Fiber Arts Thread. Knitting, crochet, quilting, weaving, general crafting - there is no telling where it will go, and that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us! Send a Private Message to Diana in Wisconsin if you'd like to be added to our Fiber Arts Ping List.
NOTE: This is a once a Month Ping List. We do post to the thread during the month. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest to Fiber Arts fans are welcomed any time!
Thanks for reminding me! All from Lion Brand. I got 3 skeins of regular Homespun and 3 of Thick & Quick Homespun, which I needed anyway for some Prayer/Comfort Shawls I want to make for Agrace Hospice. Pale pink and tan.
I got 3 skeins of Rewind Tape Yarn in a Turquoise, Brown and Navy blend which I’m going to use to make dresser-top baskets for rings, keys, trinkets, etc. for Christmas gifts.
#3, here:

$25 bucks total, including shipping. Everything they sent me is useful, so I’m happy. :)
neat website thanks for the link. Have never heard of rewind tape yarn, and I do small baskets from time to time and usually crochet with 2 or 3 strands.
Now I want to go to the thrift store yarn bin. Curse you! LOL
LOL! It’s a sickness, ain’t it?
BUT, it keeps me out of the bars and the casinos, so life could be much, much worse for all involved! :)
Raising orchids was a sickness. At one time I had nearly 30 all in the house, now none. Last winter I made a cute rope basket crocheted with white cotton clothesline rope, lined with fabric. Medium sized to have as a gift basket with toiletries in it for a house guest to take home. Design similar to this but about 12” in diameter with a really cute fabric liner.

Oh, those are GREAT patterns/ideas! Useful and beautiful, for sure.
Our Christmas gift-giving is all about ‘consumable’ items. You have to be able to eat it or use it up in some manner. This year I am asking my sister for coffee and toothpaste, LOL!
I am also leaning towards sewing gift bags that we can all use over and over, versus gift wrap. You want a gift NEXT year? Give me back the bag, LOL!
I’m also trying to rid my home of as much plastic as I can. But more about that in another post, probably on the Garden Thread. ;)
Years ago I made a bunch of ditty bags with tropical flower fabric, sewn in a simple rectangle but with double fabric, design inside and out. Top of the bag just a folded over seam with openings at one end, bought shoelaces for ties. Had many uses.
I have a few yards of really nice feed sack type material that I’ve been saving and was thinking of making produce bags for the fridge out of it.
You know, maybe I WILL do a post about sewing things and using them versus plastic in the home? Help me do some research, OK?
I’ve been recycling plastic containers and switching over to glass for home storage; I need to do more with Mason Jars for storage, for sure. Another uber-useful item!
I’ve seen some blogs where people have zero waste and zero plastic in their lives. I’d LOVE to go back to glass milk jugs, for sure! Beau drinks a LOT of milk - there needs to be a better way. We are drowning in plastic. :(
I have several glass milk jugs, some were ones that used to have a half gallon of orange juice in them originally. Nice caps and flat design good for fridge. When we had all our own milk we only used glass. Milked into a stainless milk jug, strained through an unbleached coffee filter and then straight to glass. Milk tasted amazing I would swear plastic affected the taste. Growing up of course there was very little plastic. If you can still find them, those glass square containers with the clear glass lids were all we used for leftovers. They came in many sizes. They looked just like this ad -

although we always used the lids inverted, they fit great and never came off in the fridge. Looks like you can only get used ones - https://www.google.com/search?q=vintage+glass+refrigerator+food+storage&source=lmns&tbm=shop&hl=en&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwiy1cDk-PrzAhW-CJ0JHTlYBPoQ_AUoAXoECAEQAQ#spd=13360609373132534902
I use half gallon canning jars with the white plastic caps or all my sun green tea or other drinks, also use them or kefir making, always use the wide mouth, easy to clean out.
As far as sewing things for the house I’ll have to think on that. We really don’t use much plastic in the house. Big Ziplocs for first aid stuff just because we have a lot and when you need something quick you can see what you have. I get the really big 2 gallon Ziplocs with slider tops for the freezer so I can organize and see what I am looking for, bag for veggies, meats, etc. Other gift giving fabric related was one year at a reunion I got a bunch of different colored bandanas which were a big thing in the family. I got iron on transfer paper and had a family message and the year that I transferred into the border. Those iron on transfer sheets are fun. Our foster daughter from Belarus loves designer stuff. She loves Michael Kors. We always have some small gifts when they come to visit. She also loves to help in the garden but was always borrowing garden gloves, she has killer nails. So I found some garden gloves pink inside, that nitrile stuff, and white fabric backs. I found the Michael Kors logo on the internet and flipped the image and ironed it on. Great joke and she loved them, took them home where anything with a designer logo impresses. If you did fabric bags for wrapping paper I bet you could do cute Christmas transfers.
I have been switching over to glass containers for all of my ‘leftovers’ for the fridge, and using some of those re-usable wax wraps as well. I have ONE of the vintage glass containers with glass lid that you referenced. Would really love more, so I’ll keep looking.
I’ve ordered a few things from this site that has all sorts of lids and ‘extras’ you can use with Mason Jars. I thought the grater top for a Mason Jar for grating cheese was a good idea, then you can grate the cheese right into the jar versus putting it in a ziplock, which I’ve always done, but need to change.
Fun stuff, here and a 10% off first purchase and free shipping over $20 (currently):

Wow, these are lovely suggestions!
I am not big on making dishcloths because I don’t use that kind and so I don’t even like to give them away, but I love the idea of the arm warmers because they are not much bigger and, to me, much more usable!
And I love the Fibonacci idea so much!!!! I have been planning to weave a scarf for someone who gave me some nice yarn, and now I can make it really different (not just plaid!).
Thanks so much to both of you!!!!!
That is so cute, and so useful! In fact, I may try it just for fun as I know a very small someone who could use it and her mother has given us eggs!

LOL! Ya GOOF! :)
I LOVE the Michael Kors designer garden gloves! :)
I currently own ONE Orchid, but that’s because my Amanda gave me a mini one for Mother’s Day.
It’s thriving and I’m hoping for a re-bloom in the near future.
I’m doing pretty good with my Walmart-bought African Violet, though. It’s re-bloomed numerous times so far. Lots of cheap thrills for a few bucks, LOL!
How very kind of you to share the patterns!
That is a fascinating site, too. Look what I found: https://hearthookhome.com/use-industrial-clips-for-yarn-bobbins-in-crochet-and-knitting/
The pics show the absolute genius of this hint!
