I have a few yards of really nice feed sack type material that I’ve been saving and was thinking of making produce bags for the fridge out of it.
You know, maybe I WILL do a post about sewing things and using them versus plastic in the home? Help me do some research, OK?
I’ve been recycling plastic containers and switching over to glass for home storage; I need to do more with Mason Jars for storage, for sure. Another uber-useful item!
I’ve seen some blogs where people have zero waste and zero plastic in their lives. I’d LOVE to go back to glass milk jugs, for sure! Beau drinks a LOT of milk - there needs to be a better way. We are drowning in plastic. :(
I have several glass milk jugs, some were ones that used to have a half gallon of orange juice in them originally. Nice caps and flat design good for fridge. When we had all our own milk we only used glass. Milked into a stainless milk jug, strained through an unbleached coffee filter and then straight to glass. Milk tasted amazing I would swear plastic affected the taste. Growing up of course there was very little plastic. If you can still find them, those glass square containers with the clear glass lids were all we used for leftovers. They came in many sizes. They looked just like this ad -

although we always used the lids inverted, they fit great and never came off in the fridge. I use half gallon canning jars with the white plastic caps or all my sun green tea or other drinks, also use them or kefir making, always use the wide mouth, easy to clean out.
As far as sewing things for the house I’ll have to think on that. We really don’t use much plastic in the house. Big Ziplocs for first aid stuff just because we have a lot and when you need something quick you can see what you have. I get the really big 2 gallon Ziplocs with slider tops for the freezer so I can organize and see what I am looking for, bag for veggies, meats, etc. Other gift giving fabric related was one year at a reunion I got a bunch of different colored bandanas which were a big thing in the family. I got iron on transfer paper and had a family message and the year that I transferred into the border. Those iron on transfer sheets are fun. Our foster daughter from Belarus loves designer stuff. She loves Michael Kors. We always have some small gifts when they come to visit. She also loves to help in the garden but was always borrowing garden gloves, she has killer nails. So I found some garden gloves pink inside, that nitrile stuff, and white fabric backs. I found the Michael Kors logo on the internet and flipped the image and ironed it on. Great joke and she loved them, took them home where anything with a designer logo impresses. If you did fabric bags for wrapping paper I bet you could do cute Christmas transfers.
