Alec Baldwin Gun That Killed DP Allegedly Used for Off-Set Target Practice
TMZ ^ | 10/23/2021 | Staff

The smoking gun that claimed the life of Halyna Hutchins might've been more than just an on-set prop -- it was also being fired recreationally, even when cameras weren't rolling.

Multiple sources directly connected to the 'Rust' production tell TMZ ... the same gun Alec Baldwin accidentally fired -- hitting the DP and director -- was being used by crews members off set as well, for what we're told amounted to target practice.

We're told this off-the-clock shooting -- which was allegedly happening away from the movie lot -- was being done with real bullets

This is exactly why the armoror (a 24-year old with no experience who may have been hired due to nepotism) should have opened the gun to check. And why Baldwin (who was a producer, not just an actor following orders) should have checked.

And also why you never point a gun at anyone - cheat the angles for movies. And don’t pull the trigger unless you mean to kill whatever you are aiming it. And, and and, ....

Baldwin hired her and didn’t do a background check.

I think this may turn out to be the key to the tragedy.

If this is true, and I heard the same report yesterday, I believe someone used an insufficient or defective powder charge creating a “squib round” condition. (This is when the round (projectile/bullet) is only propelled partway through the barrel and lodges there.)

If the same weapon was loaded later and fired using a blank conversion cylinder (and noone had checked to ensure that the barrel was not obstructed) the lodged projectile would then be propelled out w/lethal force.

Note that the above situation still indicates the armorer and possibly others were still negligent.

Per Legal Insurrection's excellent legal analysis of this situation, the writer effectively says Baldwin's dual-hatted Producer/Actor status weakens his legal protections.

An actor can point to the producer for a lack of safety protocols.

A producer can point to the actor for mishandling the firearm.

In this case, Baldwin has nobody to point to but himself.

And it is utterly unprofessional for guns to be used as props to be checked out to use for recreational shooting.
Once part of the film production, they should be sequestered under the full control of the armorer except when in use.

Any police department rangemaster from a decent sized department could have handled the task. But they had to fluff the resume of a 24 year old girl who wanted to take selfies.

And compound this with a gun that was dirty from being used "off the books" by the crew for target practice.

I don't know what the protocols are for cleaning guns, or how long between uses should a gun be cleaned, or how many firings it takes before a gun barrel becomes too dirty to be reliable.

But if people were using the gun without the knowledge of the people in charge, that gun may not have been in the condition that the principals thought it was in.

I can’t believe this. They don’t have the prop guns under lock and key and under the control of the armorer? Is that laxity SOP in the industry?

Did Sean Hannity talk about this? Remember he used to play those clips of Alec yelling at his daughter?

If story is true my be is that the armorer had knowledge and most likely was a participant.

So many stories

I was told that a “prop” gun is utterly incapable of being fired. It has no barrel and the only action is the trigger and hammer. The barrel is only drilled far enough to appear as a barrel. The revolver portion rotates; this it looks like a gun for movies, but has no serial number as it is inert

Further no live ammo is ever allowed on set. This is to prevent any accidents.

So now we have a real gun with live ammo

I would have thought so. I thought they kept the guns in a locked cabinet until needed.

Let me guess, this investigation is to destroy evidence and create an alibi and find a scapegoat so Baldwin gets away with it

Why aren’t the cast that quit days prior due to safety concerns not come forward?

"Any police department rangemaster from a decent sized department could have handled the task."

Officer Joey Cushman of the Arlington (Texas y'all) PD was killed by his firearms training officer.

The training officer was demonstrating that the wax projectiles of their simulated service arms would not penetrated their protective face shields.

The training officer proved his point by shooting Joey Cushman in the face with a SW 40 projectile from the training officer's service weapon.

They reload casings on the set? With round bullets?
