2021 SG passed us safely on Sept. 16, but at a relatively close distance -- astronomically speaking -- of around 153,000 miles (246,000 km). If it had entered Earth's atmosphere, it likely would have caused destruction, especially if it hit near a populated area.
The Chelyabinsk meteor and asteroid 2021 SG point out a literal blind spot when it comes to watching for so-called near-Earth objects: the sun. As NASA solar system ambassador Eddie Irizarry and EarthSky editor-in-chief Deborah Byrd explain, both space rocks went undetected as they approached us because they came from the direction of the sun.
NASA plans to launch its NEO Surveyor spacecraft in 2026, which will be parked at a spot in space between Earth and the sun so it can detect the objects we can't see from here.

Inside the moons orbit. Pretty big. If it was a rubble pile dangerous. It it was Nickle iron? Devastating if it landed close to populated area.
Are we talked 1,000 sq ft warehouse? 100,000 sq ft? Makes a difference.
“...went undetected as they approached us because they came from the direction of the sun. “
Like the Japanese Imperial Airforce?
Trump’s fault.
Trump’s fault
I never understand these Metric measurements.
Defund NASA!!
This "near miss" asteroid thingie seems to be a weekly occurrence lately. My guess is that it's been going on ever since Earth was formed, and that we're just now getting a grip on tracking the little beasties.
Either way, if one hits then there ain't nothin' we can do about it, and whatever critter inherits the Earth afterwards will be putting the oil from our fossiled corpses into their SUV's .....
One of those puppies has our name on it, but we believers will not be here when it hits. We’ll be watching from the heavenly mezzanine.
The Biden Admistration has now outlawed asteroids due to the large rocks reverting to a terrible practice of our history in this country.
It’s like getting hit by a bus vs. hit by a train I guess.
The Lord is warning us.
I say we nuke it.
Someone needs to make a list of major ‘hits’ in the last thousand years. Could add some perspective to these stories.
Number of people killed by asteroids in last thousand years...
Number killed by wars in the last thousand years...
By cars...
By horse and buggy...
by falling off a ladder...
I could have stored stuff in that.
Space alien in mothership behind the Sun: Darn it all. What if I forget and walk out of the shower without a towel on me and some NASA creep on Earth is peeping at me.
The one which hit AZ and formed the meteor crater was about 100 ft big.
That was a meteor.
NASA is like the cops—they will have the “experts” on scene with the blue paint after the asteroid hits.
If you go back a little further you could add to the list:
“Number of dinosaurs killed by asteroids....”
