NY Times test finds no identifiable tuna DNA in Subway's tuna sandwich

A New York Times analysis found no identifiable tuna DNA in Subway’s tuna sandwich, the newspaper reported over the weekend, citing tests conducted by a commercial lab.

The Times bought 60 inches of Subway tuna sandwiches from three different Subway locations in Los Angeles.

A reporter for the newspaper then removed and froze the tuna and sent it to an unidentified commercial food testing lab. The newspaper said it paid roughly $500 for the lab to conduct a PCR test to see if the substance had one of five different tuna species.

After a month, the lab said it found “no amplifiable tuna DNA was present in the sample and so we obtained no amplification products from the DNA.”

“Therefore, we cannot identify the species,” the lab said.

Elaborating on the results, a spokesperson for the lab told the Times that there were two different conclusions.

“One, it’s so heavily processed that whatever we could pull out, we couldn’t make an identification,” the spokesperson said. “Or we got some and there’s just nothing there that’s tuna.”

Subway declined to comment to the Times on the lab results.

>>Anything in the mix from Bill Clinton?<<

The samples from Arkansas are still at the lab. The Chicago test results are in, and the mayo tested positive for Jussie Smullett.

“Therefore, we cannot identify the species,” the lab said.

Must be either GMO - or made from soy.

I know if my dogs turn their nose up at it - I won’t eat it.

They won’t eat the rotisserie chicken from CostCo - all three reject it, every time - yet love the rotisserie chicken from WalMart and Ralphs.

“Accuracy of the testing...”

Sometimes I’ve wondered about that but it could be like voting-whoever interprets the results kind of thing.

Whiny Little Bobby: Mom, the tuna doesn’t taste as good as it used to.

Narrator: Millions of Americans feel the same way little Bobby does, ever since companies came out with dolphin-free tuna.

Bobby: The tuna doesn’t taste as good as it used to.

Narrator: Luckily, not every company shamelessly bends over and drops their pants for each whiny special interest group that comes along and complains about something. When animal rights activists pressured Weemsco into eliminating the dolphin in our tuna, we politely said ‘pfft. Get a life!’ Weemsco Tuna has the great dolphin flavor you grew up with. In fact, it’s chock full of dolphin because now there’s more for us to use. Weemsco Tuna tastes great because it’s a secret blend of tuna, dolphin, shark, medical waste, and dead sea turtles who choked on deflated helium balloons.

Bobby: The tuna doesn’t taste as good as it used to.

Mother: But this is Weemsco Tuna, honey. Try it!

Bobby: Mmmmmm!

I don’t agree with your logic.

Sugar is dirt cheap too, and you could say it doesn’t make economic sense not to use sugar. Yet the entire industry has gone to poisoning our food with high-fructose corn syrup because it is a little bit cheaper to use than sugar.

Companies today are brutal in using the LOWEST cost ingredients, no matter how bad they are for us. I have no doubt that if Subway could add a low-cost filler to their tuna to cut costs, they would. I have no doubt that the proportion of that filler could be increased over time to the point where there is more filler than Tuna, or none at all.

I am not saying there is or isn’t. I am saying, don’t go by what you think is “economic sense”. There is always a cheaper alternative and companies today are ruthless in cutting costs.

So if it is not tuna, what is in those large cans opened each day to make the tuna salad which goes into that delicious Tuna sandwich from Subway?... Of course it is TUNA.

My husband is from Long Island, and I’m from the South. After we graduated from college, we went to his hometown for a visit. His best friend’s family had one of the mom and pop delis you mentioned. I will never forget watching his buddy slice up some real turkey for me on the spot, and provolone, too, on some of the best bread I’ve ever tasted. That turkey sandwich is STILL the best turkey sandwich I’ve ever eaten in my 60+ years. That happened almost 40 years ago, and I can still remember the taste, the aromas, the whole experience of it. Thank you for reminding me of that day, and my husband’s best buddy. (RIP, dear friend, and thanks for making the best sammich a girl ever had!)

They always trying to rag on subway and subway continues to thrive

I personally really like their tuna hoagie but mostly I get the veggie patty which is quite excellent

They bake their own bread and have six different kinds to choose from

They have every different kind of topping for your sandwich in every different kind of meat if that’s your thing

They have 12 or 15 different types of dressing or sauces you can put on top of your sandwich

They also have salads

For me being on the road all the time subway is ubiquitous there’s a subway almost everywhere

I’m not partial I like Togo’s I like Quiznos there’s other good places to eat yesterday I had a really good fish burrito from a local hole in the wall Mexican joint

But I do feel it necessary to defend subway every time these idiots the New York Times liars in with PhD and lying actually come out and try to attack subway a great sandwich 🥪
