Covid: Brazil has more than 4,000 deaths in 24 hours for first time

Brazil has recorded more than 4,000 Covid-related deaths in 24 hours for the first time, as a more contagious variant fuels a surge in cases.

Hospitals are overcrowded, with people dying as they wait for treatment in some cities, and the health system is on the brink of collapse in many areas.

The country's total death toll is now almost 337,000, second only to the US.

But President Jair Bolsonaro continues to oppose any lockdown measures to curb the outbreak.

He argues that the damage to the economy would be worse than the effects of the virus itself, and has tried to reverse some of the restrictions imposed by local authorities in the courts.

Speaking to supporters outside the presidential residence on Tuesday, he criticised quarantine measures and suggested without evidence that they were linked to obesity and depression. He did not comment on the 4,195 deaths recorded in the previous 24 hours.

To date, Brazil has recorded more than 13 million cases of coronavirus, according to the health ministry. Some 66,570 people died with Covid-19 in March, more than double the previous monthly record.

"Brazil now... is a threat to the entire effort of the international community to control the pandemic," Dr Miguel Nicolelis, who has been closely tracking cases in the country, told the BBC.

"If Brazil is not under control, then the planet is not going to be safe, because we are brewing new variants every week... and they are going to cross borders," he said.

I don’t trust how any nation, including ours, counts COVID19 cases/deaths.

China is, of course, responsible for this horror. They should be paying damages to every infected person. And there was one world leader - Donald Trump - who did blame China directly. But then the Deep State pushed Trump aside.

China is also agressively pushing to get the fact that they were responsible for it wiped off of the history books, gleefully helped by American and European corporations. Just yesterday I was on, of all places, a Facebook cooking forum where they were discussing an item on sale at Costco. Somebody mentioned that they were originally made in France but are now made in China. Someone else wanted to know what difference that should make and I remarked on how some people don't want to buy goods manufactured under sweatshop or slave labor conditions, controlled by a government that jails anyone who disagrees with them. The entire thread got deleted.

You are no longer allowed to criticize China, even if it has nothing to do with Covid.

“...actual facts...”

Interesting question. How do you know what the facts are? The BBC is the equivalent of NPR. Or because you saw it on the internet? (Everybody knows you can’t put it on the internet if it isn’t true. LOL!)

I agree with HT. More fear porn.

Your Facebook story was both interesting and chilling. I suppose the United States is drifting towards something akin to Vichy France. Vichy France was, in theory, an independent country. But if you did something in Vichy France that displeased the Nazi overlords, there’d be hell to pay.

Oh, and Vichy France was full of collaborators. Same goes here.

I think the problem with the U.S. numbers is how deeply the virus established itself before we even knew it was an airborne virus. Those who should have known, had no clue. Hence, Dr. Fauci saying that masks are not important.

What is most troubling is the ones keeping track of the cases and deaths information have not given us a clue to what is causing the increases we are seeing today. I guess that are watching online porn instead.

Exactly! What is most troubling is the more active the virus becomes as it infests in more humans, the greater chances that mutant strains will occur. What forms they will take is a big crap shoot. We will be lucky if a new surge does not create a more dangerous virus. And there are a few dangerous ways it can do it.

To say it is the result of brain differences, is theory until it is verified with real science. I say the most likely reason is the resistance to change is a factor of culture that is learned. Culture is passed down from generation to generation much like genetic inheritance. You can change culture but inherited characteristics can be impossible.

In January of this year the US had a daily death count in the high 3000s to low 4000s for the entire month.

Make ivermectin available along with some anti bacterial medication to ward off any secondary infection, as well as anti inflammatory medication like prednisone prescribed by a physician. Try to catch it at the first sign before it gets out of hand.

Viruses will mutate, at times they may become more harmful and at other times less harmful.

Mandarin Brazil: Race, Representation, and Memory
Ana Paulina Lee

“The official saw Brazil as a ‘hospitable place for Chinese settlement’ (ibid.). Similar views were held by Kang Youwei, a leading reformist thinker of the late Qing. Kang envisioned the possibility of the Chinese building ‘a new China in Brazil’ (p. 47). Other favourable remarks were expressed by Chinese diplomats of the late Qing and early Republican periods, which reveal a clear attention to Japanese settlement in Brazil as a good model to emulate (pp. 47–8)”

So true; also on LinkedIn and Twitter.

Now, I really DON’T mean to be snarky here:

Given the large number of COVID-19 infections in the US, why is there no “US Variant”?

Dumb luck?

That is a totally dishonest graphic as it completely ignores the many who have had Covid.

Doesn’t matter at this point. They are dealing with one of the variants.

and that variant is crossing the southern border en masse with children.

Brazil is about to collapse under the weight of Covid.

IBTQbots

That's a good question, one of the few on this thread. Should there be a US varient I suspect our media will dub it the "Trump variant."
