Nearly 42,000 years ago, when Earth’s magnetic fields reversed, this triggered major environmental changes, extinction events, and long-term changes in human behavior, a new study reports.
The findings, made possible by a new radiocarbon record derived from New Zealand’s ancient kauri trees, raise important questions about the evolutionary impacts of geomagnetic reversals and excursions throughout the deeper geological record, the authors say.
“Before this work,” says author Chris Turney in a related video, “we knew there were a lot of things happening around the world at 42,000 years ago, but we didn’t know precisely how… For the first time, we’ve been able to precisely date what happened when Earth’s magnetic fields last flipped.”
Written in the geological record are numerous instances where the planet’s magnetic poles flipped. Today, such an event would almost certainly wreak havoc with modern electronic and satellite technologies. However, the potential environmental impacts of such events are virtually unknown.
The most recent major magnetic inversion, the Laschamps excursion, a relatively short-lived geomagnetic event that occurred ~41,000 years ago, provides one of the best opportunities to study the potential impacts of extreme changes to Earth’s magnetic field. However, despite compelling evidence from several paleoenvironmental records that suggest it coincided with significant environmental and ecological changes, the ability to precisely characterize this event and determine its role — if any — in contemporaneous global changes has been limited by an uncertain radiocarbon calibration for the period.

no doubt man made field reversal
Earth’s Magnetic Field Can Change 10 Times Faster Than Previously Thought
A new study by the University of Leeds and University of California at San Diego reveals that changes in the direction of the Earth’s magnetic field may take place 10 times faster than previously thought.
Their study gives new insight into the swirling flow of iron 2800 kilometers below the planet’s surface and how it has influenced the movement of the magnetic field during the past hundred thousand years.
Our magnetic field is generated and maintained by a convective flow of molten metal that forms the Earth’s outer core. Motion of the liquid iron creates the electric currents that power the field, which not only helps guide navigational systems but also helps shield us from harmful extraterrestrial radiation and hold our atmosphere in place.
We are now in a polar alignment of the magnetic axis of the core and the geographic axis of the crust.
Does that mean we are vulnerable?
Wow...a tree in New Zealand indicates our magnetic poles reversed 42,000 years ago?

Scientists Have Puzzled Over the Drifting North Magnetic Pole for Years – Now, Some Answers
Unlike our geographic north pole, which is in a fixed location, magnetic north wanders. This has been known since it was first measured in 1831, and subsequently mapped drifting slowly from the Canadian Arctic towards Siberia. However, since the 1990s, this drift has turned into more of a sprint – going from its historic wandering of 0–15 km a year to its present speed of 50–60 km a year.

I've been following his channel for years.
The north mag pole has been wandering quickly over the past 15 years. It’s taken a really goofy turn towards Russia as it was moving quickly towards the southern pole.
AMAZING what global warming can do...
With taxation we can control dangerous Magnetic Field Change!

The weakening of the field to zero then the strengthening lets in more charged partciles then normal. None of this is instaneous, its not fliping a light on and off. This “changing” leads to inceasing then maximizing then decreasing cloud cover, it has to effect glaciation events.
Trump’s fault.
Womyn and children hardest hit.
yes though the whole chicken and egg thing kind of applies here. Its possible solar changes, or meteor impacts lead to the magnetic field changes, or glacial changes related to the distribution of water around the planet affect its as well.
They are all clearly related, but which if any came first is unknown.
What came first - the Earth !
Nice site. Thanks for sharing the link.
