So now they're going to conduct a reparations commission in congress. Where is everybody pointing out that Britain's Empire was the one who brought the slaves here?
The Founders didn't ignore their role across the ocean. Why do we? Shouldn't we do what our Founders did? That's all.
Actually, Britain’s role in slavery isn’t even on my list of several thousand things to be pondering. Now that I think of it, neither is ours.
And how about holding Africans responsible? Who rounded up and sold subordinate tribes to the British and Arabs after all? They are as involved as anybody if we are pointing fingers.
>>This is asinine but right in line with the liberal thought process.<<
I am of Irish ancestry. Time to sue for reparations on how my ancestors were treated. I will take the liberal stance that differentiating between slavery and indentured servitude is quibbling.
And in Europe they were flat-out slaves. Since we are visiting Europe’s sins on ourselves I want for that as well.
American legislatures were attempting to get rid of slavery as early as 1765, Massachusetts. Governor Hutchinson vetoed it. They vetoed several anti-slavery laws.
Is that America’s fault or Britain’s fault?
“The Brits did more than everyone else combined to exterminate the slave trade. How about we give ‘em a pass.”
So America should be blamed for that which the guilt lies elsewhere?
That’s simply unacceptable. The timeline doesn’t match your “pass.” That someone did something _later_ doesn’t absolve prior crimes.
We’re being forced into this position by the progressives, don’t forget that. The issue is, how do we respond. Should America be blamed for that which didn’t start with us? It’s that simple.
No! Of course not! Let’s find another group and stigmatize them and anger them and show what wonderful people we are. Democrats are perfectly wonderful.
I’m not looking to “assign guilt”, we could easily blame Thailand if you’d like.
For the 13 colonies: Who’s ships were these? Who’s governments were these? Who’s cargo was this? There’s only one answer, and it’s incorrect to put America on the answer line.
“Excuse them or prosecute them, does anybody in the whole WORLD have the testicular fortitude to proceed?”
I’m wondering that very thing. Asking specific questions comes up with only one answer every single time. Iran didn’t bring the slaves to the 13 colonies and act as the enforcement arm against early abolition efforts. Who did? Be specific.
As I have already stated, this is incorrect in the timeline. The 1830s and beyond are irrelevant here.
It is nothing I concern myself with.
Irish and Scandinavian myself so my White Privilege really shines so to speak.
Nothing is what, is correct.
However.
What does any of this have to do with the progressives forcing this upon the lives of your grandparents, your parents, yourselves, your children and your grandchildren?
Everything is what. It has everything to do with your grandparents, parents, selves, children, and grandchildren _____thanks to the progressives_______. It has everything to do with it.
And that’s why we keep losing.
When nobody is on the battle field, those who do show up to fight win by default.
Apathy is the worst form.
11-13 million slaves transported from Africa.
Transported to the English colonies, all 25 to 31 or 32 of them, about 660-700,000. Of those, about half to the 13 North American colonies. Approximately 330-350,000
Henry Lewis Gates Jr puts the number a little higher, 388,000 to the 13 colonies, of 10.7 million surviving the passage, just over 3.5%.
England banned slavery in 1833/34, Parliament/Royal Assent. Though it continued in parts of the Empire in different forms. Australia banned slavery in 1901, indentured servitude in 1972 (?)
Vermont banned slavery in 1777, by 1804 all northern states had banned slavery.
It's not about ignoring history but distorting it. The US was a very small part of what was a lynchpin of not only the Empire, but the powerful European nations.
The British Empire owes its origins to the Normans and Gaulles as well as several Teutonic German tribes all of who practiced slavery in the ancient world. The practice of concurring territory and enslaving their population was perfected by the Roman’s who considered enslavement a more useful option than the standard practice of killing every man, woman, and child before pillaging their property. In Roman culture slaves were actually considered as dead and had no rights so that anything that you did to them was mild by comparison.
If we’re going to start judging our ancestors for their primitive behavior we’re going to have to go back a long way.
Did the Church of England ever apologize for what they did in Ireland? Just curious. I mean, they apologized about everything else.
“The British Empire outlawed slavery and after doing so acted to exterminate it.”
This is a false statement, in this context. We’re talking about 1776 and prior.
The Founding Fathers of our nation don’t get the credit they deserve in trying to eliminate slavery here. Slavery was abolished in the Northwest Territory by the Confederation Congress. Our Constitution stipulated that the overseas slave trade could not be eliminated for 20 years, which it was as soon as the 20 years were up.
Massachusetts was the first to my knowledge to attempt to ban slavery. Mid 1760s.
It was met with a veto directed from across the sea. Who’s fault was that?
Virginia was another who tried banning slavery, but was also met with a veto from across the sea.
Who’s fault was that?
We were on the front lines. Our Founders were correct on the issue of slavery. The British Empire were the bad guys who forced it on us.
I’m simply comparing the actions of our Founders, which is relevant, to the actions of that “marked by every act which may define a Tyrant” to quote the Declaration.
One side stood first toward anti-slavery efforts. It wasn’t England.
Even humoring liberals is a waste of time. Republicans “lose” because most of them are basically democrats anyway.
Slavery- Slav, which the Muslims used the Christians of Eastern Europe as slaves.
