Just bought a new Windows 10 PC for downstairs where I am much of the day but am still using a 6 year old Dell Windows 7 with IE upstairs in the evening . Twitter and other sites no longer support IE so I would like your advice re: a new browser . Thanks in advance .

Just upgrade your Windows 7 machine to Windows 10 for free:

As long as the Windows 7 machine has a valid license it should still work.

Browser for use on Windows 7 ... PING!

You can find all the Windows Ping list threads with FR search: just search on keyword "windowspinglist".

Thanks to upchuck for the ping!

Will you buy my new software and hardware too? I still run XP on a 120k inspection machine. I will take one of those too. Thanks in advance.

I’ll bet you don’t appreciate my Windows 98 or my 54’ GMC long bed pickup either!

And here I thought I was keeping up with the neighbors!

I still have Windows 7 in VMs for non-internet back-compatibility software testing ONLY. I don't use Win7 to go browsing the internet because it's too damn dangerous and every day it gets more damn dangerous.

That said.... On the Win7 VMs, I use Brave, Chrome, Firefox, and Opera. Opera is now pretty old, and Vivaldi has replaced it, but I haven't installed Vivaldi.

But, you may have issues with Win 10 on an old computer.

If the computer was "new" enough to have Windows 7 as the initial install, probably not...in fact it may run smoother. I had an old computer I was going to replace but upgrading to Windows 10 bought it a whole new lease on life.

So what is so terrible about using Windows 7? I know it is not supported anymore but if I am just reading free republic or checking my email what is so bad about using it?

I use Windows 7 on my desktop pc as my primary computer. I hate Windows 10.
It has promise but it is a mess plus spies on you.

Firefox browser as you can customize it and add ublock orgin ad blocker among many others like: Easy Screenshot, New Tab Override, Disable HTML5 Autoplay, Empty Cache Button, Print Edit WE, View Image.

You can customize and add the icons for the add-ons onto the toolbar for easy access by clicking on the 3 lines in the upper right> Customize. Just drag where you want the buttons.

Thunderbird for email. You must get the free addon called Phoenity Icons 3.0b8 as Thunderbird did an update that made all text too tiny and removed the colorful icons. Phoenity Icons 3.0b8 brings it back plus you can change the text size to what you want using the steps at the link.

Help for both:

Dissenter browser is very fast.

where do you get ungoogled chromium?

GitHub Downloads for Ungoogled Chromium

There are a few things you need to know:

All of the Google dependencies, Google telemetry, and Google spying have been stripped out. This means no automatic updates and the Chrome Web store for extensions and themes is broken. The website works but the "Add To Chromium" button is missing.

You can download and manually install an extension that restores the Web Store's "Add" button - Link: Chromium.Web.Store.crx. Download the crx file, then drag-drop it onto the chrome://extensions page ... voilà! An extension that allows you to get more extensions.

I still use Windows 7 and will continue until it dies. I use a Firefox based browser call IceDragon but haven't found any issues with others.

I'm retired now but the defense contractor I worked for would fire you if they found you using a Windows 10 pc on their network. IT was a little paranoid.

Lol I know it is a dumb question. I guess since I have been rolling with win7 for a year unsupported and things have been fine I was hoping to just keep going with it. This thread has me wondering if I really need to upgrade. Just don’t want to spend the money.

spend the money when that one dies, eats a virus, or otherwise goes to heaven.

in the meantime, keep your stuff backed up.

problem handled.

Thank you for that link. I’ll try it tomorrow. I am much too tired now.

If I can still find the thread tomorrow I’ll let you know if that link is still valid.

Come on Windows 7 is dead. 11 years old. Get real its not a thing anymore step into the present. Most people don't even own cars that old.

From my perspective that seems like a statement made by a younger person. Our newest vehicle is from 2001... an Astro Van with over 200,000 miles. Our Piper Cherokee airplane is from 1969. Both of them work just great. I have an interesting computer called a Spectravideo SV328; it was the design on which the MSX standard was based... Microsoft's unsuccesful foray into the original world of "home computers" competing against such greats as Apple 2, Commodore 64, the TI99-4A and etc... That little guy still works and I have a lot of software for it. These days it is kind of fun to show off old hardware like that to the grandkids.

We have a collection of old computer equipment going back to the mid 70s. Computers designed for Windows 7 typically choke pretty badly on Windows 10... and in many cases they are still perfectly serviceable.

At this point in time the vast majority of online malcontents are going after Windows 10 users. It is still very possible to protect yourself using anti-malware tools and firewalls that still work with Windows 7, especially if you are using a VPN and not browsing sites the kind of goofball sites that people typically pick up crap from. (porn, pirated content, etc...)

I use many applications that work better with newer faster equipment, so I am on a newish laptop right now. BUt there is nothing wrong with using an older computer with vintage operating systems, or using a Virtual Machine with an older operating system. Older hardware works best with the operating system they were designed for. Sometimes it is kind of fun to use an old piece of hardware, but it sounds like you might not understand that.

I did the same and Win 10 killed it. But, it was an old ACER laptop with a single core AMD processor and 32 bit data path. It was a useful machine for traveling when all I wanted to do was check email, or type in an airport.

32 bit machines don’t do the Win 10 thing very well, or so I have been told and experienced.

But yeah, a 62 bit machine would probably run it just fine

But, here is the kicker.
Win 10 = $139.00 downloaded from Micro-Fascist.
Unbutu = Free, or whatever you donate.

On a 11 year old machine, the Win 10 might be worth more than the machine depending on what he’s got. And you’d have to carefully backup everything before reloading windows.

You can get a reconditioned, used machine, that is 7 years old, or less, with probably way more storage, and better video, for $149.88 on Ebay.
https://tinyurl.com/4c7n2c5d

So, 10 bucks more for probably better machine, pre-loaded with Win 10, or a free Linux OS, and swap everything out.

Just my thoughts
