Found her(hound mix) in a rescue shelter 12 years ago. She was appx. 2 years old by the vet when we got her. So she is appx. 14 years old.

I would never let my pet die slowly in pain, surrounded by loved ones or not.

My deepest, most profound condolences. I just suddenly lost my Great Dane who I had for nearly eleven years since I adopted him as a puppy. Greatest, most compassionate, wonderful dog I ever had. Loss hurt more than a human bereavement. I know exactly the horrible pain you are suffering.

I’m so so sorry. My pups are 14 as well and one is showing signs of dementia as well. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

Sometimes they do not die on their own, and they suffer too much.

What until the vet checks him/ her out .
I have a 15 year old senile dog ( blind and deaf ) .
He has his routine now and stable .
He does like to bark outside at nothing for a few minutes and then lay down.
He follows the other dog around and Sleeps most of the time .

See if there are any vets who will come to your home to take care of your dog. We did that with our 16 year old dog back in August. It makes a difficult time slightly less unpleasant, especially with all the covid nonsense going on.

We have all been there. It’s very, very hard.

You have to know you are doing the right thing. It’s a fact of nature that they don’t live as long as we do.

I put my beautiful Tasha through eight cycles of chemotherapy to dissolve the neck tumor that was strangling her. They said it might last two years (she was nine). It lasted two weeks.

My Willow had her hip replaced at age seven, the other one failed at age 10 and there wasn’t enough healthy bone left to fix it.

We really do love them so much. Be as strong as you can tomorrow for her, she will know you are sad and she will worry. They are that wonderful.

It’s never easy. They each have their own personality. I have two rescues and they are just the best.

Be strong for your best pal, DallasBiff. I recently lost my all time friend, Murphy the Golden Retriever. You have to remember going to the vet is for her, not you. I’m sure we will all meet our pets again. Peace.

Here is something that brought much comfort to my wife and I.

Rainbow Bridge.

“Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

Author unknown...”

Prayers.

We had to make the call years ago when our 17 year old pointer reached that state.

If you are a person who needs a dog, get one quickly after this beloved one leaves.

“Dogs, lives are short, too short, but you know that going in.
You know the pain is coming, you're going to lose a dog, and there's going to be great anguish, so you live fully in the moment with her, never fail to share her joy or delight in her innocence, because you can't support the illusion that a dog can be your lifelong companion. There's such beauty in the hard honesty of that, in accepting and giving love while always aware that it comes with an unbearable price. Maybe loving dogs is a way we do penance for all the other illusions we allow ourselves and the mistakes we make because of those illusions.”

Ouch and then some.
Been there 4 times.
I’m so sorry for your pain.
If I make it to heaven, I believe all my dogs will be there since it wouldn’t be heaven without them!

As a shelter director thank you for giving your dog a great home. Sometimes the hardest decision is knowing when to put your dog down. All I can add is please don’t wait until the animal is suffering so bad that you can’t stand it anymore. Your dog surpassed that point long before and wishes you were not keeping him alive for your own satisfaction.

I am not trying to be critical in any way with your decision but please recognize when it is time for the dog, not for you.
