Geologists 'resurrect' missing tectonic plate
Phys.org ^ | 10/20/2020 | Sara Tubbs, University of Houston

A team of geologists at the University of Houston College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics believes they have found the lost plate in northern Canada by using existing mantle tomography images—similar to a CT scan of the earth's interior. The findings, published in Geological Society of America Bulletin, could help geologists better predict volcanic hazards as well as mineral and hydrocarbon deposits.

"Volcanoes form at plate boundaries, and the more plates you have, the more volcanoes you have," said Jonny Wu, assistant professor of geology in the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences. "Volcanoes also affect climate change. So, when you are trying to model the earth and understand how climate has changed since time, you really want to know how many volcanoes there have been on earth."

Wu and Spencer Fuston, a third-year geology doctoral student, applied a technique developed by the UH Center for Tectonics and Tomography called slab unfolding to reconstruct what tectonic plates in the Pacific Ocean looked like during the early Cenozoic Era. The rigid outermost shell of Earth, or lithosphere, is broken into tectonic plates and geologists have always known there were two plates in the Pacific Ocean at that time called Kula and Farallon. But there has been discussion about a potential third plate, Resurrection, having formed a special type of volcanic belt along Alaska and Washington State.

Using 3-D mapping technology, Fuston applied the slab unfolding technique to the mantle tomography images to pull out the subducted plates before unfolding and stretching them to their original shapes.

SPLENDA’s not bad.

5% sucralose & the rest is dextrose and maltodextrin.

If you’d like to try natural substitutes, here’s a really nice list in order of glycemic index (not sweetness).

http://www.sugar-and-sweetener-guide.com/glycemic-index-for-sweeteners.html

Mrs. HK has used coconut palm sugar with excellent results.

And I’m led to understand that Lo Han is quite sweet; a little goes a long ways.

That’s a good word.

I’ve no experience with the newer Ford SUV’s other than acknowledging they’re all more than I wanna pay, and have more bells and whistles than I ever wanted in a vehicle.

Forced into it, my inclination would be to go way older, and spend part of the monetary difference ensuring the older was solid. ANYTHING it didn’t have from the factory can always be added.

I remember when trucks didn’t try to pretend they were luxury cars; you could end a hard day’s work parked in the setting sun with the doors wide open and hose off the floorboards.

I used to be pretty dextrose, but as I got older I’m a little less nimble.

True what you say, but between urban cowboys and soccer moms, the line between work truck and family car has become more of a ranch.

I drive a 15-passenger van. It’s cheap, and everything but dump trunks and semis gets out of your way.

Thank you so much for that list!

I copied it and printed it so I can keep it as a reference. I never know when my pancreas is going to do an About Face and my sugar levels will go from 89-91 to 150+. I want to be ready when it does.

My Favorite Son manages his diabetes quite well, but had I known that his dad was diabetic 10 years sooner than I did, I might have been able to help FS delay the onset of the disease a few years. No, I don’t feel guilty. I just hate to see my son deal with a disease that could have been prevented or delayed.

Aw, look! It’s got wobbly legs!

Good morning.

I woke up just before midnight, and I’m beginning to feel it.

The Godiva Chocolates from my Favorite Daughter came yesterday, and I’ve decided to limit myself to one a day. SO hard! Such luscious stuff!

I’m not even going to speculate on what the rest of the day will bring, but I’m sorely tempted to go take a short nap. And the more I think about it, the more I’m tempted. It might improve my disposition. ;o]

I suggest a nap.

I looked at the letter. It’s pretty good, just needs some rearranging and Fun With Punctuation. However, I left my glasses upstairs, so it will have to be done later!

After my nap, there doesn’t seem to be much hurry.

Yeah...Fun With Punctuation. I wanted to take an English class when we lived in St George, but after testing, I was told that there was nothing the college could teach me because I knew more than most of the teachers about the subject. They said I’d have to go to a university.

That ability is gone, now. Thanks to CFIDS.

Interesting. Cyclamate is on the list. It was banned in the late 60s.

Was it banned world-wide? If not, that may be a list from Great Britain.

It was banned in much of the world.

The doses used by the sugar industry sponsored lab to "prove" were so grossly high that the study leading to banning was called into question, and found to be objectively flawed.

Existing bans were overturned everywhere except South Korea and the United States.

Overturning the ban here would require the FDA admitting it was wrong. That seems unlikely...

Yep. Like the CDC and WHO and...and...

Corruption R Us.

But this list is saying its available, so...it’s attainable, somewhere.

I think one can always benefit from a literature class. Even if you’ve previously read the core material, you gain new perspectives by discussing books with other students or from supplemental materials you haven’t seen before.

We just finished choir practice. I’m not sure what we’ll do after lunch, but it’s a warm, sunny day, so it will be something outside.

Yep, I was thinking maybe Canada. Maybe it can be had like Canadian prescriptions of American high-priced drugs.

Yes, one can always benefit from a literature class... if one is capable of learning.
