Geologists 'resurrect' missing tectonic plate
Phys.org ^ | 10/20/2020 | Sara Tubbs, University of Houston

A team of geologists at the University of Houston College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics believes they have found the lost plate in northern Canada by using existing mantle tomography images—similar to a CT scan of the earth's interior. The findings, published in Geological Society of America Bulletin, could help geologists better predict volcanic hazards as well as mineral and hydrocarbon deposits.

"Volcanoes form at plate boundaries, and the more plates you have, the more volcanoes you have," said Jonny Wu, assistant professor of geology in the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences. "Volcanoes also affect climate change. So, when you are trying to model the earth and understand how climate has changed since time, you really want to know how many volcanoes there have been on earth."

Wu and Spencer Fuston, a third-year geology doctoral student, applied a technique developed by the UH Center for Tectonics and Tomography called slab unfolding to reconstruct what tectonic plates in the Pacific Ocean looked like during the early Cenozoic Era. The rigid outermost shell of Earth, or lithosphere, is broken into tectonic plates and geologists have always known there were two plates in the Pacific Ocean at that time called Kula and Farallon. But there has been discussion about a potential third plate, Resurrection, having formed a special type of volcanic belt along Alaska and Washington State.

Using 3-D mapping technology, Fuston applied the slab unfolding technique to the mantle tomography images to pull out the subducted plates before unfolding and stretching them to their original shapes.

I’ve spent the morning since my shower writing letters, one to Charlie, and one to Favorite Daughter.

I have a little time before I go to get my hair cut, then I’ll have to turn around and go back to take the DVDs back to the library. I don’t even know what I have on hold!

A FRiend of mine told me about a sugar substitute that wasn’t poisonous, so I tested it on some pineapple upside-down cake. The stuff was delicious, and you’d never have known it was a sugar substitute. So, since I’ll be living within a mile of my son when I move, I plan to keep the stuff on hand.

I can eat it, too, and though I’m still hypoglycemic, the doctor told me 40 years ago that my pancreas could stop making insulin at any time, which is what happened to my then-hpyoglycemic Favorite Son, and the older I get, the closer I get to that time. So I’ll try to lessen the impact some.

Trust me: no way I’m gonna give up pumpkin pie!

Golly, ArGee. I’m sorry about all that. I learned a long time ago that things happen to me in three’s, usually in quick succession. Maybe it will happen to you that way and your Thanksgiving will be better than expected.

We’re using them as dining chair, but the description from the seller was “cathedral chairs,” fwiw.

Did I mention any names? Was I supposed to? LOL!

I never did thank you, so THANKS, Nully, for telling me about Splenda.

Back from Great Clips where I got my $15 Senior Haircut for $8.99, and that allowed me to leave a generous tip! She did a good job, too, but said there was a lot of new growth as well as a lot of breakage, so now, I need to research what will stop the breakage. I’m taking vitamins so there must be something else I need to do. Protein powder, maybe? I dunno. I’ll figure it out.

Glad to hear it!

I had a Spanish church meeting this morning, and we’re leaving in a few minutes for the park.

There are some topical treatments I can use for my hair, but I’ll see if there’s also something I can add to my diet.

Back from the library and I’m at loose ends again. I hate when that happens.

Favorite Daughter and The Guy are officially off quarantine. He goes back to work tonight and she goes Monday morning.

Well, you all can provide your opinions. We had replaced my Ford Escape of 16 years (and 260k miles) with a “new” used Ford Escape. For the other car we’re replacing a Ford Windstar. We know the Ford people don’t make minivans any more. We’re thinking Explorer or Edge. Thoughts?

We already went through a lot to decide to stick with Ford. So you can comment on other manufacturers but we won’t likely be switching. Too much re-thinking for that.

My opinion is that it’s best for you and Mrs ArGee to purchase those vehicles that you’re familiar with, and you know will give you the expected service for what you expect to pay.

I’ve been around enough car guys to know it doesn’t matter what kind of input I offer, they will go with what they determine to be the best purchase for their purposes.

So just pretend that my input was profound and meaningful and just do as you had planned to do, with the blessing of your wife and the Puppy. ;o]
