Geologists 'resurrect' missing tectonic plate
Phys.org ^ | 10/20/2020 | Sara Tubbs, University of Houston

A team of geologists at the University of Houston College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics believes they have found the lost plate in northern Canada by using existing mantle tomography images—similar to a CT scan of the earth's interior. The findings, published in Geological Society of America Bulletin, could help geologists better predict volcanic hazards as well as mineral and hydrocarbon deposits.

"Volcanoes form at plate boundaries, and the more plates you have, the more volcanoes you have," said Jonny Wu, assistant professor of geology in the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences. "Volcanoes also affect climate change. So, when you are trying to model the earth and understand how climate has changed since time, you really want to know how many volcanoes there have been on earth."

Wu and Spencer Fuston, a third-year geology doctoral student, applied a technique developed by the UH Center for Tectonics and Tomography called slab unfolding to reconstruct what tectonic plates in the Pacific Ocean looked like during the early Cenozoic Era. The rigid outermost shell of Earth, or lithosphere, is broken into tectonic plates and geologists have always known there were two plates in the Pacific Ocean at that time called Kula and Farallon. But there has been discussion about a potential third plate, Resurrection, having formed a special type of volcanic belt along Alaska and Washington State.

Using 3-D mapping technology, Fuston applied the slab unfolding technique to the mantle tomography images to pull out the subducted plates before unfolding and stretching them to their original shapes.

Gained a new appreciation for yams recently.

Went and had dinner with some friends I hadn’t seen in a decade. Rhonda diced up a half pound of bacon, did not drain it, added 3 large yams peeled and diced, large yellow onion diced, and two tablespoons of minced garlic. Various salt/pepper/oregeno and some judicious frying later... Delicious...

I brought some ribeye steaks from Sam’s Club. Had used a Kentucky Steak Shake seasoning that has large salt grains in it. Let that sit over night in the fridge so that it soaked all that flavor into the meat. Charcoal grilled to medium-rare perfection.

It was a great night...

Two things that were stand-out excellent about today’s meal: the yams and the pie. The rest of it went into the garbage.

WORST Hungry Man turkey dinner I’ve EVER had.

As to the search for the Gizmo, Amazon has them for $228+ (why I seldom shop on Amazon) and eBay has them from $25 (”pre-owned”) to $99 new. I found one for $80 that is in an open box, but that was just cursory. I’ll look again when I have time to compare offers. I prefer new, unopened.

So for me, another Thanksgiving has come and gone.

Yep. The yams of today’s efforts enticed me to freeze them in smaller portions for later use. Makes me think I’ll keep yams in my pantry. Next time, I’ll try some onion into the mix. I mean, a yam is just a sweet potato, and one should be able to fix yams in ways similar to potatoes. Sweet potato fries are quite yummy!

We get the chipotle sweet potato fries from Aldi some times. Toss ‘em in the air fryer and they come out nice and crispy. Dip them in some wasabi/mustard/mayo and they are yum-tastic.

My late brother and SiL used to cook up the sweet potato fries in the air fryer, and they were so tasty!

I was wondering what to dip them in, thinking mayo would be the best, but mayo-mustard sounds better. I don’t even know what wasabi is... or tastes like.

More guests have arrived.

We put the portable roaster oven with the turkey in the garage. I’m thinking about going to bed with Jake once Tom is done in the shower.

Japanese horseradish. Normally used on sushi. Very strong flavor and a bit astringent. The full strength stuff can make your eyes water.

I found better uses for it other than putting it on bait... :-)

Ah. Wellthen. Horseradish by any other name will still be excellent, and mixed in with mayo and mustard, well...

Now I need to find some sweet potato fries...

I just got two phone calls back to back, one totally unexpected: My Real Brother and the Little Short Person.

I told them about the sweet potato/rum/bacon dish and they’re going to try it. :o])

What fun to be a semi-innovator!

Good ideas should be shared!

Many cooking are being done here. DP and Bill are playing guitar in the sunroom. DQ’s guest is quite a civil young man, and nice looking.

Anoreth and Dog aren’t here yet.

I took the advice of a few people and went to bed, but it was far too early, and here I am, again.

It wasn’t a bad day, compared to past Thanksgivings, and really, in the grand scheme of things, I have a lot to be thankful for. I have so much more than I had in 1995, and though my health is iffy on a daily basis, I can function.

So many people have so much less, and others have very bad health, so I consider myself greatly blessed.

Now to the more mundane. The wind is once again non-stop, and I would take the chimes down but for fear of being conked by them in a gust. Anyway, it’s sustained wind at 26 mph and it has slowly lifted the tape that covers the swamp cooler vent, so I will have to get up there tomorrow and replace the entire thing. Chuck needs to get up on the roof and replace the canvas cover that has been dislodged from the winds of the last three years.

It sounds as though your Thanksgiving was shaping up into a great celebration. I’m sure the rest of the day was very pleasant indeed!

Does DQ’s Guest know he’s dating a ticking time bomb? ;o]

No, I’m sure he doesn’t, but he’s 25, and I’m sure he’ll be fine. As long as they stay together until Christmas, because she put his name in the gift drawing, and he got me. I want the Bill the Cardinal flannel pajamas from Walmart, size medium. If they’re out of mediums, he can get me a scarf.

Good luck to that relationship, then. And I hope he’s brave enough to hang around until you get your jammies!

I might check Walmart to see if there is anything I want but I doubt it. My Christmas present from Me is the new Gizmo. I really depend on that little thing to keep my hands from cramping up to where I can’t use them for the next hour after I’ve used a manual opener. That’s painful!

Neuropathy in my fingers makes holding cans for a traditional electric opener almost impossible. I can’t grip them. Plus, my fingertips are worn off my thin skin.

I rely on my manual opener, but I can see someone’s wanting something more modern.

Jake came to get me up again this morning, but instead of poking at my head, he sat on my chest and purred, so I went back to sleep.

As soon as the arthritis got really bad in my hands, it seems the Gizmo was invented, and though I couldn’t afford one when they first came out, I got my first one in Del Rio. It was an instant hit with my hands, and I’ve had one ever since. I think this one will make three. (Or is it four?)

Jake always was a sucker for a passive female. Purring makes sleep better for both parties. ;o]

What a pretty morning floof!!

Good morning.

I was writing to Charlie this morning, and was almost done with the letter and realized that I had forgotten his birthday on the 16th! Oh my goodness, I felt bad! But that was the day I got the email for the trip, and I had other things on my mind the Friday before, which would have been perfect timing to send a card. My bad.

The wind finally quit during the night and though I love hearing the chimes, they become an Ancient Chinese Torture if I hear them for two days and nights. Unngh. Still, I definitely know when the wind blows without having to look outside! There probably aren’t any leaves left on most of the trees.

Yesterday, I never did get around to changing out the ink in the printer, so I’ll have to do that before the day gets too much older.

Other than that, there isn’t much planned for the day. Maybe I’ll get another one or two containers packed up. The kitchen is beginning to bother me, which is a sign that it needs some packing attention.

Good morning. Happy Friday.

Yesterday our puppy discovered she was tall enough to try to get some turkey off the table where I was getting the leftovers off the bone for storage. We kept her from getting any, but it made it much more - interesting.

I hope everyone had a blessed day.

Good morning! The young parties are eating leftovers for breakfast. We’ll do some Shakespeare this morning, and later, I’ll take Patrick to work. I’m sure there will plenty of restocking to do after Black Friday morning.

Good morning.

Your puppy is learning all kinds of things!

I give thanks for so many things on a daily basis and yesterday, I tried to list as many as I could think of. It was long, long list.

And I did feel very blessed, thanks, how about you? How was your day?
