Geologists 'resurrect' missing tectonic plate
Phys.org ^ | 10/20/2020 | Sara Tubbs, University of Houston

Posted on 10/20/2020 9:33:20 PM PDT by BenLurkin

A team of geologists at the University of Houston College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics believes they have found the lost plate in northern Canada by using existing mantle tomography images—similar to a CT scan of the earth's interior. The findings, published in Geological Society of America Bulletin, could help geologists better predict volcanic hazards as well as mineral and hydrocarbon deposits.

"Volcanoes form at plate boundaries, and the more plates you have, the more volcanoes you have," said Jonny Wu, assistant professor of geology in the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences. "Volcanoes also affect climate change. So, when you are trying to model the earth and understand how climate has changed since time, you really want to know how many volcanoes there have been on earth."

Wu and Spencer Fuston, a third-year geology doctoral student, applied a technique developed by the UH Center for Tectonics and Tomography called slab unfolding to reconstruct what tectonic plates in the Pacific Ocean looked like during the early Cenozoic Era. The rigid outermost shell of Earth, or lithosphere, is broken into tectonic plates and geologists have always known there were two plates in the Pacific Ocean at that time called Kula and Farallon. But there has been discussion about a potential third plate, Resurrection, having formed a special type of volcanic belt along Alaska and Washington State.

Using 3-D mapping technology, Fuston applied the slab unfolding technique to the mantle tomography images to pull out the subducted plates before unfolding and stretching them to their original shapes.

Jake is correct.

Back from the foray to Lin’s where, surprisingly, they had everything I needed and in good supply, as well! Plus some things I didn’t need, such as cherry chocolates in three flavors, raspberry chocolate cocoa, and some 8” pie pans that are sturdy but disposable, should someone “forget” to return them.

I love that store more every time I go in there, but the prices scare me off!

Happy Wednesday, ArGee. Thanksgiving will be good this year for a lot of reasons. The prep is probably first on the list because it’s not hard to heat up a Hungry Man dinner and bake a frozen pumpkin pie! No mess!

I’m so sorry to hear of another Puppy seizure. I truly hope it’s not serious.

It’s OK about not “performing well” because I’m sure it came as a shock to you. And the Puppy will forgive you. It will come easier as you learn how to deal with it. :o]

Chocolate cake with Rum in it....that just got the universal nod of approval from the room. :)

The wind stopped blowing about the time I went to bed last night, but now its very cold. There was no wind when I headed to Lin’s, but by the time I got home (it’s a mile away) the wind had picked up again.

Yesterday, while I was at Walmart, I got the makin’s for a “Jeweled Cheese Ball” which is probably the best cheese ball I’ve ever tasted. Cream cheese, cheddar, dates, butter, pecans and rum, coconut and vanilla flavors. It’s been a long time since I’ve made it but I’m looking forward to it.

Of course it would, Moose! Especially if it’s a moist cake with just a hint of coffee in it. Series. Vanilla icing. ;o])

Confession time.
I’ve never had Pumpkin Pie. I know....yes.....
When this silliness ends this deficiency will have to be corrected.
It is always spoken about on here with such enthusiasm, “I can stands it no longer, Olive. I needs to try it.”

I can see a cake shop from here....
Can you hear the salivating from there? :D

I can send you my mother’s recipe and maybe you or your Mum can make it. Is canned pumpkin readily available? If not, it shouldn’t be too hard to make your own.

Best with whipped cream, but vanilla ice cream will also work!

Yessir...the salivation is rather moist, as well! Oh. That’s moisture from the coming rain. Never mind. ;o]

Tom the Son will be over later to make pies, as well as several dishes featuring bacon.

I’m tempted to try bacon on the yams, but I don’t know if rum is a good substitute for bourbon...how does that work, anyway? Baked?

I love making pumpkin pies, but this year, I’ll make fruitcakes. Two types. ;o])

I honestly don’t know: we haven’t tried it yet!

You could try pouring off the liquid from the canned yams, adding a little rum, and simmering it slowly in a pan. Seems like that would give you a rum-flavored glaze without being overpowering.

That sounds workable... Then I could add some cooked, crumbled bacon and Bob’s yer uncle!

I think I’ve found the answer to why my hours are so odd. I think my circadian rhythm is all messed up. Fascinating study, that circadian rhythm. It seems it can be re-set by fasting. But then, fasting does wonderful things if done properly.

I’ll have to think about that for a bit and then do a little more research. Fasting with the amount of supplements I take is an iffy thing. But. Research.

Bob’s your uncle? Curiouser and curiouser.

Jake has just arrived to suggest it’s time either to cook meat or to go to bed with him. What a guy.

Yes, well, I guess that’s what I get for watching so many movies from GB, Oz and Kiwi Land. I’m picking up some words, terms and phrases...

Jake is such a romantic!

Yes, it actually is. The tea was hot before I went upstairs to do laundry. Now it’s tepid.

Good idea! I had my tea earlier, thanks. But I don’t drink mine hot. Cold or room temperature, but the only beverage I drink hot is cocoa. :o])

Just finished picking out music for Sunday. I’d like to go to bed with Jake, but I need to take Pat to work at 1:30 because our state’s government is totally upwhacked and useless.
