Geologists 'resurrect' missing tectonic plate
Phys.org ^ | 10/20/2020 | Sara Tubbs, University of Houston

A team of geologists at the University of Houston College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics believes they have found the lost plate in northern Canada by using existing mantle tomography images—similar to a CT scan of the earth's interior. The findings, published in Geological Society of America Bulletin, could help geologists better predict volcanic hazards as well as mineral and hydrocarbon deposits.

"Volcanoes form at plate boundaries, and the more plates you have, the more volcanoes you have," said Jonny Wu, assistant professor of geology in the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences. "Volcanoes also affect climate change. So, when you are trying to model the earth and understand how climate has changed since time, you really want to know how many volcanoes there have been on earth."

Wu and Spencer Fuston, a third-year geology doctoral student, applied a technique developed by the UH Center for Tectonics and Tomography called slab unfolding to reconstruct what tectonic plates in the Pacific Ocean looked like during the early Cenozoic Era. The rigid outermost shell of Earth, or lithosphere, is broken into tectonic plates and geologists have always known there were two plates in the Pacific Ocean at that time called Kula and Farallon. But there has been discussion about a potential third plate, Resurrection, having formed a special type of volcanic belt along Alaska and Washington State.

Using 3-D mapping technology, Fuston applied the slab unfolding technique to the mantle tomography images to pull out the subducted plates before unfolding and stretching them to their original shapes.

We have big plans for the sweet potatoes. Bacon and bourbon are involved.

Oh, yummy!!! I have “rhum” flavoring, would that work? And I also have bacon... Scary.

Company texted and said they would be here in about an hour. I’m dying on the vine. :o|

Playing mahjong while I wait and watching “New Tricks.”

I don’t think “rhum flavoring” is the same. DP went to the ABC store and bought bourbon. I have never been to the ABC store.

I would have to drive 11 miles one way to the liquor store and unless I could buy it bulk, it’s just not worth the gas.

Bourbon is not an alcoholic beverage I tolerate well, so unless it came in pints, well, I won’t be buying it.

I miss Lee’s Liquors in Vegas Valley.

If you look to the near-left, under the heading “Videos” there is one of an overpass for animals, across I-80. Fascinating!

I hope the link works without being a FB member!

“Hay! Who shaved off my ‘stashe??”

Good morning.

The shower has been had, so I’ll now have some tea and deal with the migraine like I always do — by trying to ignore it.

I’ll go to Lin’s at 0600 and if they don’t have what I want, I’ll go to the Dollar Tree at 0800. If neither place has what I want, I’ll check every few days and make the recipes for fruit cake at Christmas! NOT going back to Walmart until Tuesday!!

It’s almost time to roust out the youths. We really need to clean out the desk superstructure today. The Advent Kitteh won’t believe I was too busy! (And I’m not: I’m just intimidated by all the Stuff ;-).

When I take Pat to work today, I’ll get more sweet potatoes. I found two more in the pantry, but I still feel like it isn’t enough.

I prefer sweet potatoes at Turkey Dinners, but that’s just me. Of course, my mother made the most awesome Turkey Dinners in the history of man, but I’m sure everyone feels the same way. Her turkey gravy was to die for, always made from scratch, never used a recipe.

She also found a recipe for cranberry-orange relish when I was still a very short person. I wish I had that now. Recipe makers today think adding more stuff makes the recipe taste better, but simple is best.

After sending me an email Sunday, telling me the search was still on, this morning’s email from the USPS tells me the books and other items are lost. Period. Apology. No recourse because no insurance.

The book on/by CW Russell is on my list for payday.

“Ruhm Flavouring”

Pussers Rum....
One wiff of that and all problems evaporate.

Morning. :)

My mother made cranberry-orange loaves at Christmas.

Good afternoon! It’s cloudy this morning. A person might think of England ... although I guess it would still be full dark there at 0700 local time.

The Sun didn’t condescend to get out of bed until nearly 08:00 this morning.
Thinking of England is never a bad thing, particularly when one is all adrift out there in the Atlantic on a very large Island. :D

Cloudy... Very hard to discern as to whether or not we have a cloudy sky to day or a very large can of grey paint has been spilt across the sky.

Compared to our other candidates, yeah. Jake is All That.

Maybe it’s the clouds, but things are high-entropy here this morning. I’m using inappropriate language way too much.

Happy Wednesday, everyone. I hope all the Thanksgiving preparations go well.

Our day started with another puppy seizure. It’s becoming harder to blame the 12 week heartworm pills but I still have some hope. Maybe that’s dumb of me.

I didn’t perform very well with this one. It’s only my second. I hope I get better because containing the mess is going to be important if we don’t get past this.

I hope we don’t have to put her on lifelong meds.

Afternoon, Moose!

There are some things that have that same effect on me, such as vanilla extract, but I do love the tasted of rum! Especially in chocolate cake!

Fie on the USPS!...

My mother's favorite curse was, "A fig! A FIG on you, USPS!"

Yeah. She GOT it!
