I've recently been introduced to the shingles experience.
And let me be the first to say, it's an experience nobody should have.
I've been introduced to entirely new universes of pain, universes I could never have imagined before.
Then, the devil his own self stalks you at night.
I got the vaccine last week. Doc says I need to get a follow up shot in six months.
I didn’t read the whole thread, so this might have been suggested.
Ask your doctor about Gabapentin (generic for Neurontin) for the nerve pain, it’s a prescription drug, but specifically targets nerve pain. It’s not an opioid, actually an anti-epileptic but they use it for neuralgias.
I have MS, so I’m no stranger to nerve pain and neuralgia. Mine was prescribed by a neurologist, but I think a GP can prescribe it, all the have to do is google it if they’re unsure of the dosage.
EACH of those 2 shots cost $200 & insurance & Medicare do not cover.
three months after I turned 50...a few years back
a visit to the DR...immediate scrip for vocodin.
I took alot of L-lysine..2000 mg daily.
it lasted about a month....with some phantom pain for another few weeks. then, gone.
area was numb for awhile, then that gradually faded, also
quite painful...kept me up a few nights.
not a pleasant experience, by any stretch
My cousin had it and said it was worse than childbirth. That was the day I went out and got the shingles shot.

Your case sounds similar to mine. I had it in my mid-late thirties on my torso. The pain wrapped around my ribs from my midline front to midline back, with one patch of rash. At the time, I was told the antivirals didn’t really do much, so I just endured it for about 6-8 weeks. For me, it was like a band of ice picks stabbing me constantly along the entire path. Fortunately, I did not have any enduring neuropathy. My condolences on your situation.

I had it on my back also. The pain was excruciating. I thought I had thrown my back out again. I went to the doctor and he saw it was shingles. I took anti virals and pain meds. It went away in about two weeks.
I wish you well with managing your shingles. There are more treatment options these days. However, when a shingles vaccine was first available remembering that experience with my Dad, I did not hesitate to get it and have now gotten the newer vaccine which gives much higher protection.

Same here. One B12 shot cured me.
I don’t know if they even use B12 for that anymore but it sure as hell worked for both of us. Probably drug companies came up with something that made them a lot more money. Always a suspicion.
Had a mild case years ago and it was awful; my sympathies.
Two tips from recent years, if you get a shingles vaccine going forward (I don’t know if actually having shingles gives you immunity):
1) If your insurance doesn’t pay for a vaccine, shop around. I was able to save 30% off the substantial cost of the shot; and
2) There are two main shingles vaccines on the market. One is made with aborted fetal cells and the other one isn’t, so look into that if you get inoculated.
Gabapentin is a drug with many side effects. People should consult a doctor.
You dont get unnunity from having shingles.
