...looming 5,700 feet over L.A., is arguably one of the world's most important spots for scientific discovery: the Mount Wilson Observatory.
Worryingly, the Bobcat Fire is charging right for it. Only 500 feet away as of Tuesday afternoon.
And Edwin Hubble yes that Hubble used the 100-inch telescope to make an even bigger discovery.
"Effectively [Edwin] Hubble discovered the universe in the 1920s up on Mt. Wilson," said John Mulchaey, director of the Carnegie Observatories in Pasadena, which owns the observatory.
Scientists had long believed that the Milky Way was just about all there was to the universe
As L.A. grew so did the light pollution, making Mt. Wilson less than ideal for observing space. By the 1940s, other observatories began to pop up around the world in more isolated spots. By the 80s, it went largely unused.

They worry about this, but don’t give a crap that if the left takes over we lose our republic.
While it’s been several years since I’ve been to Mt. Wilson, I’ve been to the observatory and it’s difficult to see how it could burn. It’s inside a building and there is plenty of room to surround it with fire equipment, not to mention cutting back the vegetation leaving nothing to burn.
It's fine for bright objects, like planets, lunar etc...In addition, they're able to use light pollution filters which can help dramatically. Btw, they run this story ever few years, every time there is a fire up there.
What is the building made from? If it’s stone or concrete, it would be less likely to burn.
It’s not going to burn and can easily be defended, and comes with decent roads where lots of fire assets are able to gain access. Every few years they run this story because it’s get attention.
It was the largest when it was built at 100 inches. The 200-inch Hale telescope came later when it became the largest. There are now much larger telescopes usually located at very high altitude in dark locationsHawaii and Chile come to mind, but they are made up of many smaller mirrors.
Both, as I recall.
largely use for solar work
I was there sometime in the 90s and watched Lasarium featuring Pink Floyds Dark Side of the Moon. Mind Blower.
Cant they do the same thing that saved the Reagan library. That place was a goner but they somehow protected it.
