California Governor Gavin Newsom met with Donald Trump on Monday for a briefing on the wildfires that continue to ravage the state and much of the West Coast.
Newsom asked Trump to "agree to disagree" on the politics of climate change, telling the president point-blank that "climate change is real" and is only exacerbating the deadly fires.
"We can agree to disagree, and I appreciate your frame on the politics of this, but let me just acknowledge two things briefly," Newsom said in the meeting, which took place at the Sacramento McClellan Airport in McClellan Park, California.
"There's no question when you look past this decade, looking past almost a thousand-plus years, that we have not done justice on our forest management," Newsom said, seeming to reference one of Trump's earlier critiques that California had not done enough to clear detritus from forest floors, which can act as fuel for wildfires.
Newsom said that the state had made a commitment to double forest management efforts over the next two years in response.
The Governor also pointed out that 57 percent of forest land in California is owned by the federal government, and only three percent is owned by the state.

"So we really do need that support," he told Trump, who in 2018 threatened to cut off federal aid if the state did not remedy what he called at the time the "gross mismanagement of the forests."
Newsom then on Monday asked Trump to "respect" the state's recognition that in addition to poor forest management, climate change is having an undeniable impact on the ongoing wildfires.

Guess it’s not the Federal Government because Gavin is not saying the fires are the Federal Government’s fault.

Anti-Trump editorializing - disguised as “fact-checking” - has completely overwhelmed news reporting at all levels this cycle. Used to be they would report at least some straight answers, to maintain verisimilitude if nothing else. Now policy is: “Let no Trump quote go unchallenged.”
What scientific evidence? The same science that led viral expert Fauci to state we do NOT need masks, then changed his opinion?

Newsome has ‘science’ to back up his phony baloney claims... It’s called ‘Political science’.
The real problem is that politicians who nothing about FORESTRY are dictating forestry practices.
This is similar to politicians telling rocket scientists how to fly to the moon and back.
Then we will need to import people from Central America and the Middle East to do the jobs Americans won’t do. /sarc

Had that same problem during my 25 year career in NY State Corrections. We had politically appointed people working as prison administrators, and others working in Albany, making policy for a prison system none of them ever worked in.

No...I started at Auburn prison back in September of 1980. I took a tour of Attica, not long after I started in the job...just out of curiosity. I worked with a guy at Auburn who had been a hostage at Attica. Nice guy.

Good point. Why isn’t the fed gov’t managing the federal forests in CA? I believe fifty percent of the land in CA is owned by the federal gov’t.
arson has impact on the annual fires that have raged for well over 50 years in California.

I grew up over in Orchard Park. We had relatives who owned a farm in Varysburg, NY (not to far from Attica).
I remember riding the Attica scenic railroad as a kid.
My younger brother works at the Big House in Lewisburg, PA.
He is in the management of the federal prison there.
He has been there since 1989/90.
Dozens of people have been arrested for starting forest fires. Thats your “global warming”. The same Democrats torching Democrat cities are torching the forests.
You notice it stops at the Canadian border.
