'Can you imagine telling Picasso what had to be in his ****** paintings!' Kirstie Alley hits out at the Oscars over their new 'representation and inclusion' rules for Best Picture [ed]

Actress Kirstie Alley raged at the Oscars' 'dictatorial' new diversity rules last night - claiming they were akin to 'telling Picasso what had to be in his ****** [ed] paintings'.

The Academy Awards shake-up means films hoping to win Best Picture from 2024 will have to hire more black, female, LGBT or disabled cast and crew or address themes that affect those communities.

Academy chiefs say the rules are intended to 'better reflect the diversity of the movie-going audience', but critics accused 'Woke Hollywood' bosses of turning the Oscars into a 'weapon against anyone who disagreed with their politics'.

I suppose there could still be entertaining movies that simply don’t aspire to be in the Oscar category and could therefore ignore the new directives. But realistically, between pandering to lefty special interests and China, it does not look promising. Even the superhero movies are going gay and tranny.

Like the Hugos for SF/F, the Oscars have become meaningless.
Who cares what new rules they make up for their little club?

Picasso didn't need a manufactured excuse to explain why his art sucked.

You have to hand it to him, though. Everything he produced made money. I've seen people on Antiques Roadshow with some doodle of his that is worth big bucks. Apparently, Picasso would run up a big bar tab and pay for it with an instant masterpiece that he would doodle on the spot. He was definitely on of the great bullshit artists of all time.

Sometimes I am saddened by the disparity between films from a different era and movies made today. And I miss Robert Osborne.

In this particular case, with the ‘new’ standards...could I remake King Kong for 99th time...calling it Queen Kong with a imaginary female Kong, and get an Oscar for best picture?

Here it is condensed (from another site):

“To be eligible for Best Picture, films must meet any TWO of the following FOUR criteria.

1. ON-SCREEN REPRESENTATION

This standard can be met by fulfilling any ONE of these:

Lead actor or significant supporting actor from an ethnic minority group
At least 30 per cent of smaller roles are played by women, LGBT people, disabled people or ethnic minorities
The main storyline is centered on an under-represented group
2. CREATIVE LEADERSHIP

This standard can be met by fulfilling any ONE of these:

At least two senior creative posts, such as casting director, make-up artist or producer, are from an under-represented group including women
At least six smaller roles in the crew are filled by ethnic minorities
At least 30 per cent of the film’s total crew is from an under-represented group
3. INDUSTRY ACCESS

This standard can be met by fulfilling BOTH of these:

Studios and distributors must have paid interns or apprentices who are women or come from minority groups
Training opportunities must be offered to under-represented groups in production, distribution and financing
4. AUDIENCE DEVELOPMENT

This standard can be met by fulfilling this ONE requirement:

Multiple senior executives in publicity, marketing and distribution are women or minority groups

I’m glad Kirstie speaks out once in a while. She seems to have a good knack for spotting the BS — and then saying something. Much like Roseanne.

More like telling him he could only use the black keys to write or play.

Was once arguing with a local “artist” about a proposed City fee (to be charged with every building permit) to fund “public art” (which I and so many other find atrocious and debasing).

What finally caused him to reconsider was my observation that “If it’s compulsory, it isn’t art.” While film has descended to the lowest common denominators of our ever more vulgar society, it remains an at least potential expression of an elevated human spirit. To dictate the tools of an artist is the antitheses of art’s humanity. I want to return to my home planet, please...

So all one has to do is make a B-rate film portraying a black transvestite in a wheelchair setting fire to a Pep Boys after calling them White Supremacists...instant Best Picture Oscar?

You nailed it - that about sums it up.

Congratulations ! You win a FROscar for Best Supporting Post

I’m remninded of Spike Lee’s criticism of Clint Eastwood’s “Flags of Our Fathers” in which Lee upbraided him for not having any black Marines in the picture. Eastwood politely informed him that the military was segregated back then and there were no blacks with the Marines who took Iwo Jima.

That reads like an old Boy Scout Merit Badge set of requirements.

“At least 30 per cent of the film’s total crew is from an under-represented group”

Hmmmm. If 51 per cent of the film’s total crew is from an under-represented group, are they now the racist majority?

"To dictate the tools of an artist is the antitheses of art’s humanity."

As legend has it, Christopher Wren was commissioned to construct the portico for the Windsor Guildhall in the 1600s. His design for an open air, covered plaza met with the disapproval of the city fathers who felt the roof spanned too large an area and insisted that Wren add additional supporting columns. Wren did so, intentionally making the additional columns about 1" too short.
