John Hawks - Who were the ancestors of the Neanderthals?
Gorham's Cave Gibraltar on YouTube ^ | September 2018, February 11, 2019 | John Hawks

The last 10 years have transformed the evidence concerning the early origins and evolution of Neanderthal populations. Genetic comparisons of Neanderthal and Denisovan ancient DNA suggest that the common ancestor of these populations separated from African ancestors of modern humans prior to 600,000 years ago, followed by a rapid differentiation in Eurasia. Later, additional episodes of gene flow brought genes into Neanderthal populations, including the mtDNA clade carried by all later Neanderthals. Yet, a number of western Eurasian fossil samples from the time between 600,000 and 100,000 years ago are difficult to accommodate within the category of "Neanderthals", including European (e.g., Mala Balanica, Vertesszollos, Bilzingleben, Ceprano) and Levantine (e.g., Qesem, Zuttiyeh) remains. In the pre-genomic framework, such samples would often have been described as generalized possible ancestors of Neanderthals, but it now appears that they may represent diverse populations that stem from deeper ancestors shared with Neanderthals and modern humans. Who were these deep ancestors of Neanderthals? This presentation weighs the known possibilities, including Homo antecessor, archaic African populations, a strict Homo heidelbergensis based upon the Mauer mandible, and Homo erectus.

This diagram works for most people, but not for folks with Down's Syndrome and a few other conditions. F is for father, M for mother; each of us has up to 64 great-great-great-great-grandcestors; no more than 46 of them has had even one chromosome pair reach you; even with the occasional crossing stream, there's no more than 46, and with crossing streams, could be less.

For those who don't know, this doesn't mean the other 18 (and all of their ancestors, plus half of the ancestors of the 46) are not your ancestors -- DUH! IOW, just because the chromosomes don't make it through, doesn't mean that Oetzi (for example) has no living descendants.

One of my grandmas had no daughters (that lived), hence her mtDNA died out, and for the same reason so did her mom's -- her brother was her only sibling; on her mother's side, I know only of a brother; etc etc...

The Neandertal Enigma
by James Shreeve

in local libraries
"Frayer's own reading of the record reveals a number of overlooked traits that clearly and specifically link the Neandertals to the Cro-Magnons. One such trait is the shape of the opening of the nerve canal in the lower jaw, a spot where dentists often give a pain-blocking injection. In many Neandertal, the upper portion of the opening is covered by a broad bony ridge, a curious feature also carried by a significant number of Cro-Magnons. But none of the alleged 'ancestors of us all' fossils from Africa have it, and it is extremely rare in modern people outside Europe." [pp 126-127]

Gallagher opened the morning newspaper and was dumbfounded to read in the obituary column that he had died.

He quickly phoned his best friend, Finney. “Did you see the paper?” asked Gallagher, “They say I died!!”

“Yes, I saw it!” replied Finney, “Where are ye callin’ from?”.

Homo Heidelbergensis - my guess, also there is a book if I can find it that describes a find of a cave full of Homo Heidelbergensis remains of which the speculation was, as I recall, they were androgynes. After all that gene had to come form somewhere.
