Health care workers that came to New York to help fight the coronavirus pandemic at its epicenter will have to pay state taxes, according to the governor.
He addressed the issues Tuesday at a news conference.
Were not in a position to provide any subsidies right now because we have a $13 billion deficit, Gov. Andrew Cuomo said. So theres a lot of good things Id like to do, and if we get federal funding, we can do, but it would be irresponsible for me to sit here looking at a $13 billion deficit and say Im gonna spend more money, when I cant even pay the essential services.
Even though the state government asked thousands of people to come to New York from out of state to help fight coronavirus, they will have to pay New York state taxes, even on income they might make from their home states that theyre paid while in New York.
Cuomo said he needs help from Washington in order to cover budget deficits from COVID-19, let alone subsidize state income tax for essential workers that flocked to New Yorks aid.

I’d tell him to pound sand.
No good deed goes unpublished. Taxing volunteers. Liberalism is a mental disorder
I heard from a very reliable source they are paying nurses 10k/week to “volunteer”.
They take it out in withholding on the paycheck.
Welcome to New York !
“So theres a lot of good things Id like to do, and if we get federal funding, we can do,”
pffftt. PDJT already gave you your sacred ventilators which you didnt even use but sell. And this clown was the MSM’s great savior and replacement for Groper Joe..
Hey, it’s New York what do you expect???
Do it yourself, start with drastic payroll cuts and DB cuts.
If They are being paid, then taxing the income makes sense.
They make it sound as if unpaid volunteers, who are not being paid, would be billed state income tax.
Charging the people who risked their lives to help you is the right thing to do because not charging them would be a "subsidy"?
I hope NYers step up and tell their Governor not to be such an ungrateful scumbag, but I suspect many agree with him. I hope he pays a price for this.
Not if the volunteer is from out of state and being paid out of state.
That means probably that your not only paying state taxes your paying the NYC local tax and by the time you have paid that whatever you made, bonus or not, is gone in taxes.
docs that volunteered in New Jersey were getting the lower end of the customary dollar per hour range and nowhere what locums (travelling docs) make
That is beneath cheezy. Didnt they kill enough old people that the federal government paid $39,000 each to treat to allow them to forgo the NY state income tax for out of state volunteers? He shouldnt wonder where the volunteers are the next time NY has a crisis.
And this is who the commie left adores, a Governor who sends sick nurses back to nursing homes to infect others, who sends sick elderly coronavirus patients back to nursing homes..and now who is gonna charge taxes for those who came to NY to HELP Cuomo is an evil prick
The way I read it is that if you are getting some kind of regular check from a business or government entity in (let’s say) Kentucky, if you are in fact volunteering in NY, Cuomo would see your Kentucky income as partially his, because you earned it in KY while you were in NY.
$7K
NY and NYC have both attempted to audit me several times.
I used to live their and am a landlord in some modest brownstone type houses there (one of which used to be our house). After I moved for good, they basically forced me to prove that I had really moved.
Then, years later, they tried it again, when I hadn’t been within the state of New York for 5 years.
It’s not like I’m a billionaire, either.
They are awful people.
