Smithfield plant in Crete now says it will stay open; workers briefly walk out in protest

An estimated 50 workers at the Smithfield Foods pork plant in Crete briefly walked off the job Tuesday in protest after it was announced that the plant would reverse course and stay open.

Local officials were told Monday that the plant would close to contain a growing coronavirus outbreak among workers.

"Our Crete, Nebraska, facility remains operational," a company spokesman said Tuesday. "The company will make an announcement if there are material changes to its operations."

The plant, roughly 25 miles southwest of Lincoln, employs about 2,000 people. At least 48 workers have tested positive for the coronavirus.

Eric Reeder, president of United Food & Commercial Workers Local 293, which represents the Crete workers, said he drove over and saw about 50 people engaged in the walkout around noon, which he said wasn't sanctioned by the union. He said the leaders of the protest went back inside and sat down to talk with managers.

That’s because they want the special unemployment payment. A nice gesture gone wrong.

I would think people working in a meat processing plant would be wearing masks, goggles, and disposables coveralls as part of the USDA requirements.

The meat plant workers are Union folks. I suspect the Top Union Thugs are behind this closure. Good for our feisty President for his EO keeping them open. That’s so political.

I think he’s doing that and it would also be a good idea to greatly increase hourly wage to where they have an excess of those wanting to work. The govt can subsidize it because it’s smarter than subsidizing farmers for euthanizing their hogs and cattle.

The Unions should be doing something.

######

The Unions probably are doing something ... just maybe not something to keep the businesses open.

Agree....how involved are the unions with these walk outs/plant shut downs?

The article says the Union didn’t know about the walk out.

Yeah.

Right.

Here in GA Gov. Kemp has had the Guard involved in cleaning up elder care facilities. Which is in sharp contrast to Cuomo making said facilities take in C+ clients/patients.

AUTOMATE THESE PLANTS!

90% of the work is easily pushed off onto machines. Pay fewer skilled cutters more.

Keep the effin illegals OUT!

Smithfield should be forced closed until an American buyer is found. No more Communist Chinese-owned crap in our country

I thought the same thing. Why in the he’ll aren’t the plant automated like Edward scissorhands with about 200 diamond saw bladed fileting the shit out of cows? Why in the hell do we still need to do this the same way we have been doing it for 300 years? Rack the cow and let robots chop the hell out of it!
