Smithfield plant in Crete now says it will stay open; workers briefly walk out in protest

An estimated 50 workers at the Smithfield Foods pork plant in Crete briefly walked off the job Tuesday in protest after it was announced that the plant would reverse course and stay open.

Local officials were told Monday that the plant would close to contain a growing coronavirus outbreak among workers.

"Our Crete, Nebraska, facility remains operational," a company spokesman said Tuesday. "The company will make an announcement if there are material changes to its operations."

The plant, roughly 25 miles southwest of Lincoln, employs about 2,000 people. At least 48 workers have tested positive for the coronavirus.

Eric Reeder, president of United Food & Commercial Workers Local 293, which represents the Crete workers, said he drove over and saw about 50 people engaged in the walkout around noon, which he said wasn't sanctioned by the union. He said the leaders of the protest went back inside and sat down to talk with managers.

Somebody said the Governor ought to send in the National Guard to clean these plants to rid the virus. Don’t know if that is the sort of thing that Nat’l Guard does or not.

While I applaud Trump’s action here he should also move the federal government to provide masks and financial support for cleaning to these factories. (If he hasn’t already)

This must have something to do with the President’s action.

...

50 out of 2,000 isn’t impressive.

At least 48 tested positive. I bet far more than that would test positive for the antibodies whose presence indicates they earlier had the virus, defeated it and are now immune!

They don’t have enough job openings, even if they fire the 50 that walked out.

I wonder how many lies that sentence contains. No media coverage of the walkout, eh?

thanks to the insane stimulus bill

...which Republicans opposed when it gave more money to workers to go on unemployment than to continue working. The media slammed them for being heartless. I think that the Repulicans could see the campaign ads in their heads.

Including the ability to stay home if you were fearful of getting the Corona virus was a second mistake.

The Unions probably are doing something ... just maybe not something to keep the businesses open.

I don't suppose Eric left out the part about the catering truck in the parking lot...

A USDA meat plant should have everything there to disinfect everything. There are tons of requirements. I’m sure they steam the whole place on a regular basis especially before their quality audit.

The problem is making sure none of the workers going back are infected.
