IN 2013, SCIENTISTS were stunned to find microbes thriving deep inside volcanic rocks beneath the seafloor off the Pacific Northwest, buried under more than 870 feet of sediment. The rocks were on the flank of the volcanic rift where they were born, and they were still young and hot enough to drive intense chemical reactions with the seawater, from which the microbes derived their energy.
Now, however, another team of researchers have discovered living cells inside exceedingly old, cold oceanic crust in the middle of the South Pacific. It isnt yet clear how these new microbes are managing to surviveand yet, there seem to more than a million times more of them, for the same volume of rock, than in the younger crust.

Yes, Congress is overrun with dorkfishes, octopussies, giant squishes, flying fubars, deep-sea snafus, abysmal worms, shrimps, great white snarks, sleezy cucumbers, mobsters, fiddlin’ crabs, and mud creeps.

Seaview, is that you?
Loved that show, Seaview and the Flying Sub. Sea Hunt, Cousteau, Flipper, and Voyage strongly influenced my early career ventures.

Nostrildamus! Haven’t seen him for a long time. (Not missed!)
Waxman is an unfortunate soul.
The year I graduated went into the Marine Corp, and after 4 years, I transferred into the Navy, and spent 16 years in and retired.
One salient fact remains with my time in the sea service.
there is nothing endearing about it, it just sucks
Part of my dislike of all things ocean:
things that will eat you whole,
things that will take chunks out of you
when your out in it you can't see land for days,
a storm comes up and you're tossed about, like it's cool.
And a thousand other things you would never hang out with, not only because of interspecies dating regulations, but that will leave you part of somethings digestive track.
But the worse thing imaginable is.... when you're cruising out in the middle of "it" the realization while you are in a multi ton steel, & aluminum "cork" that the nearest land is
Most unnerving indeed.
