Dr. Francis Collins, head of the National Institutes of Health, said researchers are moving “as rapidly as humanly possible” to develop vaccines and treatment for COVID-19, caused by the novel coronavirus, which has infected more than 100,000 people and killed 3,400.

Collins singled out a potential treatment researched through the Antiviral Drug Discovery and Development Center based at the University of Alabama at Birmingham during a presentation at the university. Remdesivir, a compound developed by pharmaceutical company Gilead Sciences, has already been given to infected patients in China and Nebraska in the hope it can reduce serious complications. No treatments for the new virus have been approved by the Food and Drug Administration.

The National Institutes of Health doles out federal funding for biomedical research, including $39 million for the Antiviral Drug Discovery and Development Center. Results from studies on human coronavirus patients won’t be available until next month.

Remdesivir was developed as a potential treatment for Ebola but did not perform as well as alternatives in clinical trials. But it has shown some effectiveness against other coronaviruses SARS and MERS in the laboratory. The drug is designed to block the replication of the virus that causes COVID-19.

“Remdesivir actually does provide benefit in an animal model against MERS,” Collins said.

Volunteers for the study include people from the Diamond Princess cruise ship who get the compound as part of their treatment at the University of Nebraska Medical Center, according to the NIH.

“We urgently need a safe and effective treatment for COVID-19,” said Dr. Anthony S. Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases. “Although remdesivir has been administered to some patients with COVID-19, we do not have solid data to indicate it can improve clinical outcomes.”

Trials for Ebola proved remdesivir was safe for patients, and researchers hope the current studies will show it works against COVID-19. If it does, the treatment could still face obstacles that prevent its widespread use.

“Since this is a drug that hasn’t actually been approved by the FDA, can we find enough doses?” Collins said.

Many pharmaceutical components are manufactured in China, which has been crippled by the COVID-19 outbreak, Collins said. Gilead would be responsible for increasing supplies of the drug, although Collins said the NIH is also helping drug makers with supply problems caused by the outbreak.

“One of the things this shows is how vulnerable we are as a global community to pipeline disruptions,” Collins said. “It makes you realize you don’t have a good backup plan.”

Other antiviral drugs, including some used in the treatment of patients with HIV, have been tested against the new virus. So far, none have been approved against COVID-19.

Doctors want to find an effective treatment because vaccines to prevent infections typically take much longer to make.

Development of a coronavirus vaccine started within 24 hours after scientists identified the RNA of the virus and has moved quickly, Collins said. It often takes several years to create and test new vaccines. Researchers could begin trials as early as April, but a vaccine might not be commercially available for some time.

“Realistically we are a year away,” Collins said. “No one should count on that being the solution in 2020.”

If this is indeed the cure Pres.Trump has stated in the past,if I’m not mistaken, that he is not opposed to people in need of the drug being allowed to take it.Gotta wonder if this is it?

Cynic's multiple choice quiz.

The CDC is either

a) utterly, criminally incompetent

b) utterly, criminally trying to cause the US to crash as revenge on Trump

Choose either one or both.

Doctor from Bridgeport Hospital tests positive for coronavirus, the second case linked to Connecticut

Gov. Ned Lamont announced late Saturday morning that a Bridgeport Hospital-affiliated doctor has coronavirus, the second time in two days that a New York state resident working at a Connecticut hospital has tested positive for the virus.

“This most recent case of another New York resident who works in Connecticut testing positive for COVID-19 shows us what we already know – coronavirus is here and viruses don’t stop at state borders,” Lamont said in a statement.

Officials have not disclosed his name nor specified his exact role at the hospital, but said he was not a hospital employee. The described him as a community physician who made rounds at Bridgeport Hospital.

It is indeed a sin to avoid church for illegitimate reasons.

“ 24And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, 25not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching.” (Hebrews 10)

Not to mention all the commands about taking communion and how to do it, praying and worshiping together, serving together, and submitting to ordained leadership, none of which we can keep when home communing with ourselves.

The “recipe’s” I’ve seen say the 70% is what you want. I bought three bottles though there was 91% on the shelves. I’d like to find some Aloe moisturizer though that shouldn’t be is as short supply. And New Mexico still has not seen a case yet. Anyway, I’ll do some searching later - got to patch my RV roof before the next storm hits tomorrow.

Don’t forget to plant herbs, too.

I would hazard a guess that most people don’t have a clue what they look like. They often look just like other ornamental plants so you could easily put them in you flower garden and nobody would be the wiser.

I’m curious to know how effective a quarantine will be if the masses are already infected. I understand the thought, but does it really make a difference?

Quarantine and banning gatherings is meant to slow down the spread, as well as allow the medical system to handle the extra case load.

CDC is infecting the whole world at this point.

We have become part of the problem instead of part of the solution.

I think they are deeply incompetent—earlier in the thread I explained their strategy (imho) and why I thought it was both poorly designed and poorly executed.

Be also said that he got it from work, from infected material that was delivered from China.

Getting ready to weld myself into my house on that one. Yikes.

Coronavirus in Boston: 60 head to Brigham and Women’s Hospital for testing

Site the scene of large-scale COVID-19 scanning site

By SEAN COTTER | sean.cotter@bostonherald.com | Boston Herald UPDATED: March 7, 2020 at 1:02 p.m.
Sixty people who attended a recent biotech conference in Boston were rushed to Brigham and Women’s Hospital late Friday for testing for the coronavirus just hours after it was announced new suspected cases of COVID-19 originated from the gathering.

“This is a rapidly evolving situation,” Mayor Martin Walsh said at a crowded news conference in City Hall, joined by Gov. Charlie Baker and a phalanx of other local and state officials and first-responders.

The officials said a conference by Biogen at the Marriott Long Wharf downtown last week resulted in five new “presumptive positive” cases of the coronavirus. Three of those are in Boston and two in Norfolk County.

...eventually tested.

How long is ‘eventually’?

How many people did she infect after she was released?

How many people at that hospital are now quarantined?

Everclear might be a close approximation. ?

It’s not isopropyl though.

I confess I don’t know. I’ve always used the isopropyl or povidone for germ control. Or bleach.

I’m’a have to look that up.

The guy infected two hospitals (doorknobs, table tops, medical equipment etal), probably a bunch of patients who resided there as well as a bunch of hospital workers—nothing to see here.

Jerk Lamont has tested a total of twenty one people in the state (my state).

We may have several hundred untested positive cases by now—just from this one source.

Those hospitals should have been closed and decontaminated.
