"There are no words to express the result" was the beaming reaction of Belgium's Royal Institute for Cultural Heritage, after a 15th-century masterpiece -- painted over shortly after completion -- was restored to its former glory.
And they were right -- commentators have been left speechless by one particular aspect of the newly revealed painting.
The latest panel of the "Ghent Altarpiece," a large work by Hubert and Jan van Eyck, was unveiled in December as part of an ongoing project to restore the painting to its original design.
The painting -- also known as "The Adoration of the Mystic Lamb" -- depicts a lamb, representing Jesus, being sacrificed on an altar.
And it's this holy lamb that's giving viewers nightmares.

Top layers of paint were removed.
I guess it depends on what is meant by ‘restoration’. If it was just a matter of removing layers of later paint, the ‘new’ lamb was the original artist’s intention.
If it actually involved significant re-painting, it seems that would be a ‘recreation’.
-—When hundreds of years have passed it is old work. This new painting may more closely resemble earlier underpaint it is still a new painting. It wasnt simply removing old paint to reveal older paint, was it?-——
The “new” more human-like face of the lamb IS the original:
“Dubois noted that the original lamb had a more “intense interaction with the onlookers” than the repainted version.”
I love that movie. Mr Bean lol.
That isn’t a restoration; it’s a very bad retouch job, although the person has painting skills. He apparently doesn’t understand what restoration means. The retouch artist changed the original eyes and muzzle into a totally different image.
Atrocious! What appears to be a Lilly (a symbol of purity) behind the head of the Lamb is mistaken by the restorer as an ear so he/she takes the ears off the lamb and replaces it with two Lillys. Another master piece ruined by a 4th grader.

Sigh.
The “new” face IS the original.
Wow that is a seriously crappy job of restoration. Eyes and mouth are totally different in form.
I wonder if the original artist did that on purpose to make it look more “human”, to present the idea that the lamb is actually Jesus.

APPLAUSE! Yes, thank you. Correct.
Indeed the eyes have been moved WTH.
I’ve heard of cauliflower ear, and lily liver, but never lily ear!...............
Looks like duck lips.
I can’t really be a judge.
I tried painting once, but couldn’t stay inside the lines................
Agree!
The hysteria by drama queens about this (including those in this topic) was surpassed by the restoration done with Michelangelo's work in the Sistine Chapel. Anyone disturbed by the sight of the original work's eyes should be throwing up until they pass out when they pay attention to the blood spigot. :^)
