A daily dose of baking soda may help reduce the destructive inflammation of autoimmune diseases like rheumatoid arthritis, scientists say.
They have shown that when rats or healthy people drink a solution of baking soda, or sodium bicarbonate, it becomes a trigger for the stomach to make more acid to digest the next meal and for little-studied mesothelial cells sitting on the spleen to tell the fist-sized organ that there's no need to mount a protective immune response.
Mesothelial cells line body cavities, like the one that contains our digestive tract, and they also cover the exterior of our organs to quite literally keep them from rubbing together. About a decade ago, it was found that these cells also provide another level of protection.
In the spleen, as well as the blood and kidneys, they found after drinking water with baking soda for two weeks, the population of immune cells called macrophages, shifted from primarily those that promote inflammation, called M1, to those that reduce it, called M2. Macrophages, perhaps best known for their ability to consume garbage in the body like debris from injured or dead cells, are early arrivers to a call for an immune response.
In the case of the lab animals, the problems were hypertension and chronic kidney disease.
"The shift from inflammatory to an anti-inflammatory profile is happening everywhere," O'Connor says. "We saw it in the kidneys, we saw it in the spleen, now we see it in the peripheral blood."
When they removed or even just moved the spleen, it broke the fragile mesothelial connections and the anti-inflammatory response was lost, O'Connor says.
The treatment also attenuates inflammation and disease severity in rheumatoid arthritis.

I don't give medical advice, but maybe you should look into potassium bicarbonate if sodium is a problem for you.
Would calcium carbonate make a good substitute for baking soda? How about potassium bicarbonate?
Just don’t drink any vinegar anytime prior or after!
I do baking soda for brushing and hydrogen peroxide with water for a gargle.
I have a terrible time keeping my teeth “clean” - my dentist yells at me constantly, but no cavities in over 20 years.
Or did they not really mean that they work together?
Yeah. It's weird, but they do work together. You mix half a tsp of bicarbonate in 8 ozs of water then add two tablespoons of apple cider vinegar in that order, from my experience. It makes a not unpleasant drink which I take twice a day. It seems to have helped my general health since I started this regimen at age 65.
Baking Soda and Vinegar is a good way to clear a drain. If you take both at the same time you’ll likely rupture something due to the gasses generated.
Fresh pressed apple juice and baking soda keeps the doctor unemployed.
Thanks, friend.
folks have to stop falling for big pharm and big medicine’s no salt this and lower salt there, blah blah blah..
it isnt your salt intake, but the lack of potassium and magnesium levels in your body that cause the issue.
all three must be there in the right amounts to work together..if they are not, that is what causes bp issues, etc...but you dont hear this from big pharm or med do you?
of course not, gotta keep pushing bp meds, etc....

Thats what I was going to say, he’s putting it in the wrong end...lol
Do not drink a baking soda solution after eating a salad with oil and vinegar.
Bump.
Good info!
I drink it everyday for acid indigestion.

My stomach produces too much acid.
Not my stomach but that’s where it goes.
I put a 1/4 teaspoon of baking soda in my coffee. Kills the acid in the coffee. I also brush my teeth with it. I started doing that a while ago when someone here on FR posted an article about a bacteria in the mouth that’s linked to Alzheimer’s that is killed with baking soda. It was fascinating.
