How you can stop a cold within HOURS of catching it: Our handy tips on how to beat the sniffles...

One day you’re feeling fine, the next, your nose is running, you’re sneezing and your throat feels like you’ve swallowed broken glass.

Welcome to the annual cold season. Most of us will get between one and three colds each year, usually in autumn and winter, caused by one of more than 200 different cold viruses.

And there is little you can do about it — a cure for the common cold remains one of the Holy Grails of medicine — but better understanding of how these viruses spread could be the key.

What we do know for sure is that the first 24 hours are crucial; this is when the infection takes hold and starts to multiply, causing symptoms.

Here, with the help of three leading experts — Professor John Oxford, a virologist at Queen Mary University of London, Professor Ron Eccles, director of the Common Cold Centre at Cardiff University and Professor Peter Openshaw, a professor of experimental medicine at Imperial College London — we explain what is going on during the first 24 hours of your cold and what you can do to reduce the severity of your symptoms.

I like Flonase or even saline. Or nothing if you’re breathing

Definitely doing the low-carb thing....to the extent that I don’t eat wheat or most other grains. Daughter is on Keto. Sort of. She lost 30 lbs but still has more to go.

Thanks for reminding me about electrolytes. My MD wants me to drink a lot more water (never touch the stuff) with electrolytes in it. I have them on the shelf, always forget they’re there. Sort of a negative addiction problem.

It definitely makes me feel better when I’m on the diet - it has a sort of tranquilizing effect, which suggests to me at least that I was depleting important things.

I’ve heard about Vicks on the bottom of the feet, and then put on white socks. (Never tried it.)

Yes, along with Vicks on your neck and chest and under you nose.

My dad swore by 100 proof Allen's ginger brandy. Two shots, go to bed and sweat it out. He lived to be 91, I can't remember him ever having a cold.

Yes, she's very curious and gets into everything. Had to take the keys out of the tractors, Gator and zero-turn lawnmower cause we caught her up on the big tractor acting like she was driving it. Lol!

She will be a better person growing up for having lived on our cattle farm.

Wow, I’m really surprised nobody has mentioned this one yet. Raw garlic... Just eat a clove of raw garlic as SOON as you notice that little tickle in the back of your throat. Then repeat every hour for a couple of hours. It works. It truly does! Just be sure to do it as SOON as you notice the tell tale tickle.

Strange approach, but I will look further into it.

Thanks!

Go to a doctor or Urgent Care place or even your dentist.
Get Amoxicillin. By the end of a day you will be back to normal.

The best cold medicine needs a prescription now because of the meth heads.

Vitamin D3 is one of the few vitamins that will build up in your system if you have too much. Do not take it if you don’t need it. Have your blood tested before taking D3.

I got really, really sick on it.

You’re baaaaaad !

FYI, Zicam is back in the stores. Don’t know if they changed the formula, but I saw it.

I believe I’ve read that sugar ingestion starts impairing your immune system within a few hours.
So Halloween gatherings where people mingle and eat candy are a double whammy - the trainer at the gym swears that Halloween candy is responsible for the first big wave of colds each season.

I thought cayenne pepper was good for warding off colds, but definitely makes my nose run.

It also kicks off those ‘brain endomorphins’ - like chocolate does.

When I discovered spicy Korean food, I was in heaven...

“I read your post -KNEW IT WAS YOU !!! You’re baaaaaad !”

You know me so well ... ;-)

(I heard the new Zicam is weaker than the old stuff, and isn’t swabs. Don’t know if it’s true.)
