The Impeachment Needle May Soon Move (Peggy Noonan)
Peggy Noonan Wall Street Journal column ^ | Oct 19 2019 | Peggy Noonan

Things are more fluid than they seem. That’s my impression of Washington right now. There’s something quiet going on, a mood shift.

Impeachment of course will happen. The House will support whatever charges are ultimately introduced because most Democrats think the president is not fully sane and at least somewhat criminal. Also they’re Democrats and he’s a Republican. The charges will involve some level of foreign-policy malfeasance.

The ultimate outcome depends on the Senate. It takes 67 votes to convict. Republicans control the Senate 53-47, and it is unlikely 20 of them will agree to remove a president of their own party. An acquittal is likely but not fated, because we live in the age of the unexpected

you will cease to be a major political party.:

They need to understand that they will be such a small minority party that there is no point in paying a plugged nickle to buy their sorry asses ever again. They will be utterly contemptible and totally worthless (a thing of no marketable value, even to K street).

Does anybody believe the Republican senators will vote 20/33 for impeachment? Really?

Not a problem. They’re already planning on that by supporting amnesty.

It's a problem for them! The game has changed. They will be so insignificant that they will have nothing to sell. It will be like the peace and freedom party demanding to be bought off.

Yeah, Peggy the GOP is going to pull the pin and blow itself up over impeaching Trump.

They call it the STOOOOOOPID PARTY for a reason so I guess that’s not totally impossible. But I think the self-preservation gene will kick in with most of these guys.

Whatever Republican votes to impeach Trump will be soon gone from the Senate, even if we have to vote for a Democrat to do it.

IF the Senate Republicans voted to oust Trump they would cease to be a political party that would ever win another election.

This would be POLITICAL Suicide. 10’s of millions of Conservatives/Republicans would likely never vote again if the Senate Republicans were responsible for Trump’s removal.

Democrats would win Congress and the Presidency in perpetuity.

The disaster that happened after Nixon will look like a rain shower compared to the typhoon that will land on the GOP post Trump. They best re-read their party history. These morons like Romney and Kristol have utterly no clue at all what sort of Pandora’s box they would unlock.

After the conviction vote, seemingly no matter whether he is convicted or not, there is another (simple majority) vote to bar him from holding future office. They seem crazy enough to try to prevent a second term, even if not “guilty”.

They haven’t figure out that we have figured out that a traitor in your own camp is the most intolerable thing you can have.

The people who want to give Flimsey Grahamnesty a FOURTH try at giving our country away haven’t figured that out.

All the people on this thread that keep saying that they will never vote Republican again if President Trump is impeached and convicted in the Senate (i.e. “that will teach them!”) don’t seem to understand the gravity of the situation.

If President Trump is convicted in the Senate, there will never be another “free” election in this country in its current incarnation. Either the Dims/Communists/Socialists take over completely, turn totalitarian and kill off 35% of the population; or total revolt against the FedGov by the states and the citizenry happens, and the nation is fractured, destroyed and (hopefully) remade into a Constitutional republic.

It is that serious.

The main problem is Trump is exposing all the corruption, D and R!

All the trillions in boondoggle programs that NEVER accomplish what they are funded for! All that money being laundered with graft by proxy means! That is why we have a uni party!

I think that if the Senate convicts, it will be Romney’s doing as he still has presidential ambitions. I think that what Romney will do is push impeachment openly, work behind the scenes to get 20 (21) Republicans on board so conviction is assured, and then at the time of the vote to convict, he will give a noble speech about how he can’t convict the president because it is politically motivated or whatever, knowing he is going to be convicted without his vote, and expecting that Republicans will support him en masse in the primaries as a hero. I wonder if we will go for that?

“I’ll go out on a limb here, no impeachment.”
I will go out on a limb as well. If he is literally impeached by the Senate, there will more violence and blood shed the United States has ever seen. It will make our first Civil War seem like a picnic. We as a nation will never recover.
