The Impeachment Needle May Soon Move (Peggy Noonan)
Peggy Noonan Wall Street Journal column ^ | Oct 19 2019 | Peggy Noonan

Things are more fluid than they seem. That’s my impression of Washington right now. There’s something quiet going on, a mood shift.

Impeachment of course will happen. The House will support whatever charges are ultimately introduced because most Democrats think the president is not fully sane and at least somewhat criminal. Also they’re Democrats and he’s a Republican. The charges will involve some level of foreign-policy malfeasance.

The ultimate outcome depends on the Senate. It takes 67 votes to convict. Republicans control the Senate 53-47, and it is unlikely 20 of them will agree to remove a president of their own party. An acquittal is likely but not fated, because we live in the age of the unexpected

Matt here has a list of possibles.

Here is a list of 18 GOP senators who I think could vote to convict Trump in a full senate impeachment trial. Throw in a few total surprises (blackmail, etc) and the result might just shock the world. They only need 20. Here is my list of 18 (so far) potential GOP votes against Trump. Please let me know if you totally disagree with any of these possible votes to convict Donald Trump, or if you have some more senate GOP names for my list.

1. Mitch McConnell KY 2. Mitt Romney UT 3. Ben Sasse NE 4. Susan Collins ME 5. Ron Johnson WI 6. Richard Burr NC 7. Roger Wicker MS 8. Lisa Murkowski AK 9. Lamar Alexander TN 10 Mike Lee UT 11. Marco Rubio FL 12. Joni Ernst IA 13. Martha McSally AZ 14 Cory Gardner CO 15. Roy Blunt MO 16. Rob Portman OH 17. Pat Toomey PA 18. Rand Paul KY

If the senate can concoct a rule that the impeachment trial vote is taken in secret as it is in jury trials, there would be 30 republicans vote to remove him. They could do this as the constitution allows them to make their own rules for their proceedings.

The GOPE likes their offices and perks of power. They know full well what happened in 1974. They will cease to be a major party if they are this stupid

“DO NOT ASSUME that Trump won’t be ousted by the Senate “

Can you name 20 Republican Senators that are willing to commit political suicide? Can you name even 10?

In the certain knowledge they will never be elected to another public office.

Because nobody who voted for Trump would vote for one of those bastards for any elective office on the planet. And that includes Murkowski, Romney etc.

I’d bet there are MORE than 20 that would LIKE to vote Trump out, but less than 5 that will cast that vote. And it’s far from certain that all the Dims in the Senate would vote for ouster.

Less than 50 Aye votes in the Senate, IF the House can muster 218.

If President Trump is impeached, his supporters will march on Washington. It will be the largest protest in the history of the city.

See you there!

If these Senators DARED to vote against Trump I can guarantee you republicans will vote Dem and get McConnell and the rest out of office BECAUSE at that point it won’t make a difference if these BASTARDS are in control or the Dems are in control !!!!!

The hype of impeachment is from the DIMs. The dimwits have done a poor job of selling it to the American ppl.

Nope. Other then Romney and Gardner, not a shot from the rest. Gardner is toast next electin and Romney stupid enough to think he will take over the GOP. Other then that the rest of them are smart enough to know they will lose their office and their perks of pwoer if they betray this President.

What the Never Trumper don’t get is you will either hang with this President or you will cease to be a major political party.

Not a problem.
They’re already planning on that by supporting amnesty.
The important thing is to steal the country from the citizens and subsume it to the UN.

It better not happen. If there are enough Republican defections on the Senate, I am DONE with the Republican party. I will never vote R again. Further, I will vote against any R rep or senator who supports impeachment. I don’t care WHO they are running against; I will vote against them. There need to be consequences for turncoats.

Pretty sure I’m not the only one who feels this way.

Trump and the GOP are in an interesting game which looks like this:

Outcome 1. Trump survives and wins 2020 and the power of the swamp is diminished.

Outcome 2. Trump is removed, and we witness the extinction of the fightless GOP.

Outcome 2a. Trump survives, is a clear loser in 2020 and the GOP is still sunk.

The GOP is trying to negotiate a better outcome and Trump is going berserk making clear exactly how corrupt and out of control everything in the swamp really is.

The foreign policy "experts" have painted themselves into the war-party corner, while Trump (obviously using the resulting bargaining power that gave him with Ergogan) got a cease fire (deal with me or deal with those war-mongering crazies).

Of course Trump is a master at the game and the other side is 10,000 self-serving idiots who cannot develop a workable and unified position - in part because such a position doesn't exist. Hillary accusing Tulsi of being a Russian stooge is just another example of how utterly broken all of the political establishment is.

The part of the calculus that is different this time for the GOP is that the Trump base detests them, and regards the GOP as worse than something that sticks to your shoe. Trump said he needed them in 2016 and so they got both houses, betrayed the voters and they lost the house. They haven't figure out that we have figured out that a traitor in your own camp is the most intolerable thing you can have.

Peggy Noonan is at minimum, George Will’s paternal sister - or it seems...at worst, equivalent to Romney, Bush, et al. Her starched upturned collar, I think, cuts off blood supply to her brain.

No, there won’t be a vote, like Rush said...they won’t let the senate take chances...are there heavy blackmail and lobbying for votes behind the scenes, you bet!!!

Will they get 20? NO.

Is there remaining stuff that will sway public against PDJT to generate such 20 votes? NO.

Closer to the election, there may be some suicides, however, as more congress critters realize their time is nigh and PDJT isn’t going away. Meaning, their dirt may seep out.

Like Bones said, “come on, man, use logic!”

Remove him from office and the Republican Party is no more.

Exactly. As I posted above the interesting part of the game is a GOP that is trying to use impeachment as leverage to get Trump under control and instead he went berserk on them. Now what do they do? [Answer: don't get yourself in this position in the first place - show loyalty and defend Trump and stop asking how your corrupt ass can get a little piece out of it].
