DALLAS - A former Dallas police officer who fatally shot an unarmed man in his apartment was found guilty of murder by a Dallas County jury on Tuesday.

Guyger was off-duty but still in uniform after a long shift when she shot Botham Jean, a 26-year-old accountant from the Caribbean nation of St. Lucia. Murder carries a sentence of five to 99 years. The punishment phase, which will start Tuesday afternoon, will determine just how long her sentence will be.

Cheers erupted in the courthouse as the verdict was announced, and someone yelled "Thank you, Jesus!" In the hallway outside the courtroom where Guyger was tried, a crowd celebrated and said "black lives matter" in raised voices. When the prosecutors walked into the hall, they broke into cheers.

She messed up big time. Let’s accept her premise. A policewoman chose to shoot an unarmed man instead of detaining & arresting them?

Welcome to the slammer. A cop in prison gets a lot of attention I suppose.

>>>I think if it hadn’t been white cop/black victim, it would have been negligent homicide

It fits because of the fact she was in the process of committing a felony (violation of 30.02 - which is a state jail felony) and death occurred. She entered a habitation illegally - thus committing a felony - and that resulted in the negligent death of an individual.

That is the textbook definition of what they charged her with and anything less would have been injustice had it been your loved one shot and killed - CORRECT? That is why they charged her with 19.02.b.3 murder. Remember, there is no 1st or 2nd-degree murder in Texas.

The act of shooting twice doesn’t necessarily mean anything. Many of us are taught a ‘standard’ threat response which in most cases is a controlled pair to the center of mass, followed up with other responses if that doesn’t stop the threat.

Thanks, your explanation of Texas law makes the outcome understandable.

she did not murder anyone.....she went to the wrong apartment....the door was cracked open and she pulled her weapon, something most freepers would do ....

she killed someone....it was not on purpose....

she's white....there's your answer to this "murder" conviction......

meanwhile those two black teenagers who deliberately beat a white man to death will probably get their hand slapped.....

she's white....that is the answer....

I read today the charge was subsequently upgraded to murder

Probably by a politically ambitious prosecutor . . .or one of those shameful white guilt cowards

Murder 1? Murder 2? I think if its unintentional murder, ie negligent homicide, then yes. Wouldnt say she had intentional plans to murder him beforehand.

But yes, negligent homicide.

I’m actually a little bit surprised. I thought murder would be a tough sell ... thought they’d convict of manslaughter.

She reportedly yelled “show your hands” twice

Did the neighbors report hearing that? Or just her?

I think if it hadn’t been white cop/black victim, it would have been negligent homicide.

If the victim had not been black, she would have walked away clean.

“””She reportedly yelled “show your hands” twice”””

No other witnesses heard her say that.

It was her word against that of a dead man who cannot say what she said.

I noticed that when she was on the stand, she did not say ‘POLICE’.

And also, for those entrusted with higher authority and supposed extra training with weapons, dealing with tense situations, and an ability to kill others as part of their job, plus having the state normally on their sidein just about every comtroversial thingtheydo, yes, I believe they ought to be held to higher standards than the average person. When they screw up huge when they are the last group of people that should, and innocent people die because of them, yes, they need to be held to a higher standard.
