stroller. Needed a blood test for kidney function before my cat scan. Much discussion, confusion with who can order, read, etc. I finally said, I’m a free American, can go to a lab and get test done on my own. I did do that, to the amazement of some.

When mom’s dementia took a turn downward and both her safety and dad’s health were threatened my talk with dad included that mom living with people who had expert training in how to care for her needs and safety was caring for her. He loved their time together there. They actually set up a private table where they could eat their evening meal, (sometimes they even put flowers on the table). It was in a room with a TV (dad bought them a vcr player so they could watch the Lawrence Welk programs he had taped). Sometimes they even danced there. He always tucked her in and sang her to sleep When she passed the staff said they lost not just mom but their “love birds” who they all loved meeting their needs.

Not everyone has the luxery of living ten minutes away, but visiting when they can is so important to both the person and their caregivers. You know that some don’t. Difficult for the staff when they become the support person for so many. Takes some very special people to work in assisted living with dementia patients. We were blessed to have their expertise.
