Weston, I think when dying parents ask their sons and daughters to always take care of the remaining parent, it doesn’t necessarily mean doing it yourself. So many older people are neglected and completely ignored.

Actually, if the son or daughter, due to their own health or family issues, is unable to keep the elderly parent with them, getting them the care they need IS taking care of them. It’s not doing a parent any favors when you are unable to give them the care they need, but keep them home because you made a promise.

So many go into assisted living facilities and, to their surprise, love it. My friend’s mother fought long and hard to stay in her home, but it was just too much because of her dementia. After about a month in her new facility, she had lots of friends, was NEVER in her room because of all of the activities, and the kids pretty much have to book a time to go and visit lol. Chin up - you needn’t beat yourself up.

Thank you so much. I know you are right and she will actually get better care than with me. When she got the fear of showering, I knew she needed more help than I could give. She needs someone who can help with that and some toilet issues. We are a very modest family and I was not about to invade her privacy to help. She is only 20 minutes away and I expect she will come to view it as home. It’s a wonderful place. Her sister lives there and passed away there. Many of same staff still working there and remembered my mom and her sister who they dearly loved. I know with my head this is a good thing, but I can’t help the hurt in my heart that she has to go through dementia.
God has a time for everything. Thanks again for all the encouragement.

The son of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Paul Pelosi Jr., has worked as a sales manager and loan officer for Countrywide in the San Francisco Bay Area and received about $1 million in loans from Countrywide on a condo. The younger Pelosi, 39, who holds a law degree and an MBA from Georgetown University, obtained a $916,000 mortgage from Countrywide in 2004 and a $114,500 line of credit the same year.

He has since paid off the loans, which he said were made at market rates. His mother said through a spokesman that she had no knowledge of her son’s mortgages.
