FDA links 16 brands of dog food to canine heart disease
Seattle Times/New York Times ^ | June 29, 2019 | SANDRA E. GARCIA - The New York Times

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) identified 16 brands of dog food that had been linked to heart disease in dogs that eat them, according to a report the agency published Thursday.

In the report, the FDA named for the first time the pet food brands most frequently associated with adverse events. In descending order of most incidents of heart disease, the brands are Acana, Zignature, Taste of the Wild, 4health, Earthborn Holistic, Blue Buffalo, Nature’s Domain, Fromm, Merrick, California Natural, Natural Balance, Orijen, Nature’s Variety, NutriSource, Nutro and Rachael Ray Nutrish.

The heart condition examined in the report, canine dilated cardiomyopathy, often results in heart failure and is believed to have a genetic component, according to the report.

The American Veterinary Medical Association estimates there are 77 million pet dogs in the United States, most of which are not developing dilated cardiomyopathy, the FDA said in a statement. The number of dogs affected with heart disease may not seem like a lot, John de Jong, president of the veterinary association, said Saturday, but the FDA found a trend and is informing consumers of it.

De Jong said the trend of not having grain in a dog’s diet might be a culprit.

“The whole grain-free thing is a popular myth,” de Jong said. “If they look at the dogs’ relatives in the wild, like coyotes, wolves and hyenas, they live on their prey. Those animals they prey on are typically herbivores, so they are ingesting grains anyway.”

Well, the problem seems to be with the plant substitutes used for grain, but a very small number of animals are seeing this problem.

What caught my eye was the incredible stupidity shown by the doctor who is president of the “American Veterinary Medical Association.”

He seems to think that when wolves eat an animal that can eat grains, the wolf is actually eating grains. In essence, we have a VIP doctor who thinks carnivores are herbivores.

What a friggin’ idiot.

Never heard of or seen any of these brands but it must suck to be Rachel Rae/Ray right now

Given that same logic. Cows eat vegetation so if I eat a steak I am actually a vegetarian. Yes, I have used that line many times as a joke, now I have a doctor to back me up.

You can keep your existing dog food if you want to.

In what way are these meat based dog foods made up of meats that come from animals that somehow escaped being fed GRAIN???? That is one of the stupidest conclusions I have ever encountered? Are they only made of carnivore meat who only eat carnivores who also only eat carnivores, thus diluting the grain in the diet to the point of negligibility??? ABSURD conclusion.

I love vegetarians. Pretty much all I eat are vegetarians, except for the occasional mountain lion steak. Ted Nugent

So, if only eating meat causes heart disease in dogs, how is it that wolves and coyotes don’t die of heart disease?

Correlation is NOT causation. I suspect the REAL cause of the correlation is that dogs fed with these foods live longer lives than dogs fed on lesser quality dog foods made with cheaper ingredients. By living longer, some dogs with a genetic propensity to this disease live long enough to develop it, where other dogs die too early to show the symptoms.

SHEEESH!

I wonder which dog food industry organization funded this study.

All of those are the expensive, so called healthy dog foods. Dogs seemed to live well on Purina Dog Chow and Ken-L-Ration in the past

Actually, the “meat” component is not the problem. It appears something with the plant substitutes to grains.

It may be similar to problems men can have when eating a lot of soy-based, high-estrogenic foods.

ol Roy is not on the list.
Dry dog food is unnatural and it dehydrates. Pet food is a scam.

My cat caught a rabbit. My dog ate it, ears, tail, everything, even cleaned the floor afterwards.
I went into a panic. My dog just ate rabbit-by-products! She’s doomed.

Well, I don’t have a dog in this hunt. Never had a dog, don’t want a dog and never will have a dog. Just thought it was a good tie in to one of my favorite Ted Nugent quotes.

A lot of brands are mentioned. I wonder how big a hit they’re going to take from this?

My pup eats Taste of the Wild.

If you read the study it is not the meat that is the problem. It is the high amount of legumes they use in the food to replace the grain that they used to use to get the protein content up (mostly chick peas and lentils). Apparently some dogs have issues with legumes.

I still agree that it is a small number of dogs and is being overblown in the article. But you knaow the news exists to scare people any more so...

I feed my older dogs the 4health brand from Tractor Supply. I don’t intend to change. They did much worse on a corn based food. Skin issues and odor.

What a friggin’ idiot.

He is not an idiot, he is right.

The wolves eat the whole animal, intestinal content and all.
