"One of the interesting things about meteors is most of them enter the atmosphere during the day so people don't see them," Dr Gorman said. That doesn't make sense. Are meteors afraid of the night so they wait until daytime to fall?

One of these days I want to spend a night in a remote place...far,far from civilization...on a crystal clear night.

That’s easy to do in Australia. I hear that when you get away from Sydney and Melbourne, the continent is mostly empty.

Thats easy to do in Australia. I hear that when you get away from Sydney and Melbourne, the continent is mostly empty. Yup,having traveled in Australia it's been my experience that when you're 100 miles or more from the ocean you're in the middle of nowhere.
Many years ago we drove from Tampa to Key West.It was a long drive and, given that it was late and we were tired,we decided to spend the night on Marathon Key which is about half way down the Keys.It was crisp (for Florida at least) and crystal clear night and I remember being spellbound by all the stars I saw that night...it was the first time I really understood how many there were.
I'd love to do it again.

My favorite place in Florida for stargazing is Big Pine Key, located about halfway between Marathon and Key West. I camped there in 1975.

I created the gifs from YouTube news reports of the event. The site I use to create gifs from YouTube vids is free and very simple to use. The website is in the lower right corner. I always remove the HTML coded direct link. It begins with a < br > break. You with see it in the HTML coding for the gif once you copy and paste the generated code onto a blank white comment screen here

being spellbound by all the stars I saw that nigh
Same experience on pheasant hunting trips out in N.W. Kansas. Stayed in a farm house out in the country, no city lights, neighbors miles away, just a sky filled with stars and coyotes howling out in the distance......Pretty cool stuff.
As a side note, even heard migrating geese that I didn't know flew at night too.....

...free use of the gif creater at that site is limited to 10 sec gifs. You don’t need to register or anything. Simply paste an url from a YouTube vid into the little box and click preview. You can adjust the start and end time to 10ths of a second. And the vids can shorter than the full 10 sec if you want them to be. I’m sure they must have an even better version that you must reg and pay for. One not limited to 10 secs.
