A well-preserved frescoed fast food counter is among the latest discoveries unearthed by archaeologists in the ancient Roman city of Pompeii.
The 150 or so thermopolia, or snack bars, dotted across the city were mostly used by the poorer residents, who rarely had cooking facilities in their home, to grab a snack or drink. Typical menus included coarse bread with salty fish, baked cheese, lentils and spicy wine.

No, I loved Alton Brown’s show! Didn’t watch every episode. But I learned a lot watching the episodes I managed to catch. I do remember him, or someone, baking fish in tons of salt. Luckily for his guests, the fish didn’t absorb all of it or, being the honest person he is, he would’ve showed the guests clutching their throats and flopping around on the floor like stranded fish!

I think it was dried with salt; fresh fish layered in salt to preserve them for later.

I have a couple cities in this country that should happen to in mind.
When Christ fed the multitude from a kids lunch basket, the Bible says it was 5 loaves of bread and 2 small fish.
Sounds like too much bread unless the loaves were really small.
