Charlotte Riley, who teaches history at the University of Southampton, penned an interesting op-ed in the New Statesmen last month where she literally suggested standing in the way of busy males on their morning commute to help resist perceived patriarchy in society. According to Riley, such tactics are necessary because males have naturally been raised to believe they have a right to occupy space. The point is that men have been socialised, for their entire lives, to take up space. Men who would never express these thoughts out loud have nevertheless been brought up to believe that their right to occupy space takes precedent over anyone elses right to be there, complains Riley. They spread their legs on tubes and trains, they bellow across coffee shops and guffaw in pubs, and they never, ever give way. While Rileys hatred of males is unique in that she chooses to hide her contempt in the form of refusing to move over at the train station, she also admits that reclaiming some of her space helps her to question potential assumptions that might be standing in the way of her success.
Not all women even know theyre women.
I’ll bet she stops them with the aroma of her yeast infection.
Bet her cats are all female...isnt that right ms Wiskers?
5 years from now, she’ll convert to Islam and will happily be beaten by her Muslim husband.
An angry, miserable life.
Don’t be intersexsplaining this to me. :)
Ms. Riley, I don’t have anything particularly against history as a discipline but it does seem to be especially well-stocked with whiny little girls who think a little bit of provocative posturing is a good replacement for actual critical thinking.
And, professor, if my words ring a bell, they should...
I’m a larger man who takes up space without trying. I would notice if other men made an effort to take up space. I don’t see it. Where is she looking to see this?
“Oh, you’re a feminist? That’s cute. Now get out the of way!”
I don’t get it either. Surely just standing in someone’s way isn’t going to work for very long. I first took it as say, blocking their driveway - but I suppose a lot of people in England take the train instead of drive.
